A Couple of Cuckoos Season 1 was Rough…

I kind of remember watching A Couple of Cuckoos Season 1 when it came out in 2022. I don’t remember how I felt about the anime, at all. It has been almost 3 years since then and I have watched tons of other shows in the meantime. So when I saw that Season 2 was coming up in Summer 2025, I decided to rewatch Season 1 out of curiosity. And uh, well, to be honest, Season 1 was quite rough. Before I even get into the nitty-gritty, I just don’t think that A Couple of Cukoos is fun and that’s its biggest flaw.
So welcome back to another article and today I decided to go back a little and talk about A Couple of Cuckoos Season 1, eight weeks before the Season 2 release lol. So let’s get started.
Why was A Couple of Cuckoos Season 1 so bad?
Well, harem is a difficult genre to do well. And to be fair, only a few animes manage to do it justice. I say that because, in a harem anime, you have to treat every character as a potential love interest without showing relationship growth. This makes character development exceptionally difficult as you have to develop characters without evolving their relationship with the MC. This is the reason why most harem animes feel flat and why I personally dislike the genre.
A Couple of Cuckoos falls victim to this exact problem. Despite having an interesting plot setup with complex family relationships, this anime cannot nail the characters to save its life. This is crazy because shows like Girlfriend, Girlfriend and I Got Married to the Girl I Hate have a similar setting too. But those two shows are way more entertaining because they have better characters. And as I said, A Couple of Cuckoos just isn’t fun. While Girlfriend, Girlfriend, and I Got Married to the Girl I Hate are at least entertaining to watch.
Sticking with the characters for a bit more, A Couple of Cuckoos also has a bland MC. Yes, at least Nagi has some real goals, unlike someone like Kazuya from RAG. Nagi is still boring at the end of the day and lacks any meaningful character development. The anime did get a decent budget so the animations are good, I can’t really complain about those. But aside from that, A Couple of Cukoos is just a bland anime overall, if not somewhat frustrating.

But yeah, those were my thoughts on A Couple of Cuckoos Seaosn 1. Will I watch Season 2? Probably not, The season is packed with loads of good shows. Though I may still check out Season 2 just for content’s sake lol. With that said though, I will take my leave here. See ya!
