An Archdemon’s Dilemma is Better Than You Might Think

Article at a glance:

  • Despite a predictable plot, the anime excels in world-building and foreshadowing future events.
  • Zagan and Nephy’s evolving relationship adds depth, though supporting characters could be better developed.
  • Animations and soundtracks are average, with the series relying more on its storytelling and character interactions for appeal.

Well, the anime is scheduled for 12 episodes and the 9th episode just aired this week so I think it is safe to review this for now. Of course, I’ll have to trickle down my reviews bit by bit starting next month since I also have to prepare to cover for the Summer season. And as you may know, the Summer 2024 season has quite a few bangers awaiting. But that is not what we are here to talk about today. An Archdemon’s Dilemma is something picked up on a whim. But I have to say it has turned out to be much better than I thought.

It is better than the usual fantasy we get anime in every season. Also, it is nice to see a non-isekai fantasy every once in a while. So welcome back to another one of my reviews. This time we are talking about An Archdemon’s Dilemma and why I enjoyed it so much despite it not being anything too out of the ordinary.

Overall, the plot is not that special. There are no sudden plot twists or anything crazy like that but I don’t mind. Not everything needs stupid plot twists to be good. One thing that does really stand out in this anime though is world-building. It is much better than any other run-of-mill fantasy anime. The magic system is well-explained and it is also cool how Zagan, despite being not very powerful on his own can defeat almost any other sorcerer because of how well he understands the magic system.

The plot also understands the value of setups. This is why whenever something happens in this anime, it doesn’t feel random. Most of the time, future events are foreshadowed well before they happen. If this ever gets a season 2, I’d love to see the connection between the Archdemon crest and holy swords exploited. If they don’t do it in the remaining episodes of this season itself that is. So while it does fall into certain cliches here and there and the plot is very predictable at times, there is also a lot to like here in terms of the plot.

The backstories in this anime are quite well-handled. Zagan is an interesting person. He thinks he is all cool and edgy but he’s just a normal person with normal needs lol. He just suppressed his true feelings because of how he grew up. I like how it takes time for Nephy to open up to him. She spends a good while thinking that Zagan is going to sacrifice her. Of course, that is not the case. And I like how once they are close, they start to influence each other’s characters.

I wish the supporting cast was a little better. Characters like Barbatos could’ve been handled better in my opinion. Yes, he banters with Zagan are fun but he could’ve been a lot more engaging. Manuella is a minor character and she does her role well. Chastille may get more character development in the upcoming episodes so I won’t comment about her just yet. But as of now, she is also in the “eh” category. the only supporting cast member that stands out is Valaefor. And she is adorable.

Animations and Soundtracks

Nothing much to say here. The production value of this anime is quite average. And aside from some cute scenes with Chastille, Nephy, or Valefor, the animations don’t really stand out much. It is the same with the soundtracks. They are not bad, just not memorable.

That is all for now!

Well, here are my final scores for An Archdemon’s Dilemma:

  • Plot – 8/10
  • Characters – 7/10
  • Animations – 6/10
  • Soundtracks – 6/10
  • Enjoyment – 8/10
  • Overall – 7.5/10

That is all for now. Let me know what you guys think in the comments. I will take my leave here. Gonna listen to Not Like Us for the 1000th time T_T, see ya!
