Anime of the Year 2023?

Key points for Potential Anime of the Year 2023:

  • The list covers a range of genres and styles, from action-packed Bleach to the dark side of the entertainment industry in Oshi no Ko to the character development masterclass in Vinland Saga.
  • Bungou Stray Dogs Season 5 stands out for its intense cliffhangers, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats and craving more each week.
  • Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is highlighted as a potential Anime of the Year for 2023, praised for its well-rounded elements, including plot, characters, action, and nostalgia.

No, no, I am not here to pick one anime right now LOL. No, today we are here just to take a look at a few potential candidates for Anime of the Year 2023. There are actually quite a few anime that have a strong claim to this title this year. It has been a great year for anime, after all.

Of course, this is all subjective as hell and it is not like I have watched every single show that came out this year. So please let me know yours in the comments. With that said, here are my potential picks for Anime of the Year 2023. Let’s get started.

Honorable Mentions: DanMachi Season 4 Part 2 and The Apothecary Diaries

Going in order of release

Vinland Saga Season 2

Even though all the fast-paced action and violence of season 1 is gone, season 2 still remains a strong entry, In fact, it is probably better than season 1. Because the plot has now transitioned from a typical revenge story to something much more mature and unique. On top of that, Vinland Saga Season 2 is a master class in character writing. The character development in this show is just brilliant.

Oshi no Ko

Yes, of course, this had to be on the list. This anime had the community in a stranglehold for quite some time and for a good reason. Oshi no Ko features an amazing plot, filled with the dark side of the entertainment industry. And amazing character work on top of that. Also, this anime probably had the best opening and ending themes this year; definitely had the best first episode though. Kind of a no-brainer pick given how much it was talked about a few months ago.

Bleach TYBW Part 2

I could have simply included this because of how much the anime improved on the source material. But nah, this season really shows what Bleach is all about. And we barely even see our MC, Ichigo in this season. And yet, this season had some of the best fights and character moments in the entirety of the series. The last 3 episodes were almost completely anime original and were some of the best episodes of the show, by far.

Bungou Stray Dogs Season 5

Bruh, this anime beat me the hell up. Every single episode ended on some stupid cliffhanger that left me begging for more like an idiot. No other anime this year made me feel like this. Seriously, every time you think “This time for sure things will be better”, nope, screw you, here’s another character in mortal danger, and the episode ends. BYE! Watching this weekly and waiting impatiently for every episode was an experience.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End

Call it recency bias or whatever but this is currently my top pick for Anime of the Year 2023. Why? Because Frieren has everything. Despite starting off a little slow, this anime has an amazing plot. great characters, some surprisingly good action, and some sweet comedy/SOL moments. The fights are not “traditional” fights either, they have a lot of thought behind them. Combine all this with good animations and some amazing BGMs, and you have a complete package, suitable and enjoyable for almost all audiences. The plot is coated in this beautiful feeling of nostalgia too.

That is all for now!

Those were my potential picks for anime of the year 2023! Let me know yours in the comments. I will take my leave here. See ya!
