Anime Recommendation of the Week – Seishun Butayarou Series

Yes, I avoided writing the full name. It was for 2 reasons, 1 every LN volume has a different name so newer seasons will also have different names. And 2 because it’s too long. But, I’ll be honest I stumbled into the Seishun Butayarou Series because of the whole bunny girl affair. I was you back then, easy to clickbait but holy shit I was not expecting the emotional body blows. After that, I revised the series 2 more times and I still get emotional from it.
So welcome back to another edition of our anime recommendation series. This week we are talking about the Seishun Butayarou Series. I love this series and I really hope to see a sequel to the movie soon. This series is just way too good. Well, let’s get into more details about it.
Introduction
series is based on the LNs of the same name. The original LNs are written by Kamoshida Hajime and illustrated by Mizoguchi Keiichi. It started its serialization on 10th April 2014 and is still ongoing. The anime has 13 episodes and a sequel movie both of which are made by CloverWorks and they came out in fall 2018 and spring 2019 respectively.
I have not read the LN but, I’d still make this assumption: the reason we are not seeing a sequel to this anime is probably that the LN probably does not have enough content for another season yet. Because other than that, Seishun Butayarou series is more than popular enough to warrant a sequel. It is an awesome series, even if you dont like romance anime, I’d still recommend this series just because the plot is so good.
Plot
Seishun Butayarou Series’s plot revolves around something known as the Adoloscnece Syndrome. We do not know what causes this but when teenage guys and girls go through a lot of emotional strain, the world around them is affected by their feelings. A few examples of this are: the protagonist gets scratched across his chest, his sister loses her memories and becomes like a totally different person, and Sakurajima Mai becomes invisible to a lot of people.
That is the best way I can describe the plot of Seishun Butayarou series. It is really complex and it is going to deal a lot of emotional damage to you. Because if you are a certain age, you should have definitely experienced one of the many emotions portrayed in the series. It is for this reason that I find this series so relatable. It is so much more than just a plain old rom-com.
Characters
Ah yes, this is another area in which Seishun Butayarou series excels in. There are not that many characters but all of the characters get massive character development throughout their respective arcs. The series is in a way aimed at fixing the insecurities and “flaws” of different characters. After all, it is their emotional state that messes up the world. I love the protagonist, Sakuta; he is really open and direct with his thoughts and really cares for his friends.
Animations and Soundtracks
The animation quality is above average, to say the least; it is CloverWorks we are talking about here so you know what to expect. The soundtracks though are awesome, that opening theme is catchy as hell. And the ending theme, Fukashigi no Karte cuts in really deep. It is sung by the VA of the character featured in the ongoing arc and it always hurts. They also slightly change the ending animation to depict the differences in character. It is an awesome and very fitting ending theme.
Why should you check out the Seishun Butayarou series?
Quick pointers on why you should check out this anime:
- Great plot

- Lots of good waifus
