When I started watching the Anne Shirley anime, I did not realize that this was an adaptation of a 1908 book by LM Montgomery. I just thought that this anime was a period piece. However upon finding out that it is based on a 1908 novel, a lot of things fell into place. Anne Shirley has this innocence, a childlike wonder, and a sense of optimism that a lot of modern stories lack. This anime reminds me of a simpler time, Anne herself never fails to put a smile on my face with how expressive she is.
So welcome back to another article. Today I wanted to talk a little about the Anne Shirley anime. You know I was about to say that this anime feels like a Studio Ghibli work but then I realized that the novel it is based on is WAY older than Studio Ghibli lol. But yeah, let’s get started.

Why do I Like the Anne Shirley Anime so much?
Well, the first and most obvious answer is Anne herself. She is so colorful and imaginative. She always finds a way to exaggerate what she likes. Anne is very talkative but the way she speaks is just so entertaining that you can’t help but listen to her yap. Even someone as seemingly strict as Marilla took a liking to Anne because of the way she speaks lol. Anne is temperamental and outspoken and she doesn’t know formalities because she grew up in an orphanage. But that’s fine, those flaws only make her more compelling.
Aside from that, Anne Shirley stands out because of its simplicity. It is a very simple story about a girl who was raised in an orphanage getting a chance to live a life she actually likes. The story simply follows her as she makes friends and grows up. The early 1900s setting further adds to the simplicity of the story. As I said, this show will remind you of a simpler time. Also, the animations do their best to emphasize the beauty of Green Gables and why Anne likes them so much.

Anne and Diana’s friendship is so well done too. Both of them, despite having similar interests couldn’t be more different from each other. That’s what makes their dynamic work. At the end of the day, this anime is just simple and pure joy, The sense of simplicity and innocence are what make this anime and by extension, the novel special. I have seen a lot of people say that Anne Shirley was the progenitor of a lot of modern shoujo tropes, and that may be true but I just enjoy Anne Shirley for its simplicity, above all else.
That is all for now
But yeah, those were my thoughts on the Anne Shirley anime. Let me know what you guys think in the comments. And if you are looking for some family-friendly anime, I cannot recommend Anne Shirley enough. With that said though, I will take my leave here, I will go have a nice bath now. See ya!
