Comedy animes have always been a weakness of mine because they have gotten me through a lot of tough times. And they still do. Feeling down? Come watch an episode of Grand Blue or Gintama and you’ll be back smiling in no time. There are a few comedy anime I have on my hard disk for rewatch value and Asobi Asobase is definitely one of them.

So welcome back to another edition of our anime recommendation series. This week we are talking about Asobi Asobase. I really love this anime, it is senseless at times but it is funny and entertaining as hell. So then let’s get into it right away!

Introduction

Asobi Asobase is based on the manga of the same name by Suzukawa RIn. It was published in the young anime magazine from June 2015 to November 2022. As for the anime, it is made by Lerche Studios and came out in the Summer of 2018. The anime currently has one season of 12 episodes and a sequel OVA.

Plot

There is not much to describe here in terms of the plot. 3 girls Hanako, Olivia, and Kasumi form an unlikely friendship because of a game. And the three of them go on to form the ‘pastime club’. As the name suggests is just an excuse for them to continue their daily stuff and play around every once in a while.

Again, this is a gag-humor anime, so there is not much sense in looking for logic in this plot. You just go with whatever happens and enjoy the absurdity of it. And I do promise, the gag humor in this series is freaking hilarious. Humor is subjective, so you may not like it but it is pretty good still.

Characters

Now, this is what really drives Asobi Asobase. Again, don’t expect to see character development or something here. But the series has some absolutely hilarious character moments. And every single character is entertaining as hell. The character interaction of Asobi Asobase plays really well with the gag humor adding to the comedy and improving the series. So yeah, it is pretty good.

Animations and Soundtracks

So this is one aspect of the show where I do some complaints. Well, 1 complaint mostly. I really don’t like the art style the anime went with. It is way too bright for my taste. The OVA had a little better art style and that I do like. Still, this is a relatively minor issue, and given how fun the series is, it is something I am willing to overlook. The soundtracks are pretty alright too.
