Battle Angel Alita, Manga Recommendation of the Week!

Key points for Manga Recommendation – Battle Angel Alita:

  • Battle Angel Alita manga lacks a proper anime adaptation despite Hollywood producing a movie, highlighting its significance in the past.
  • The manga’s plot revolves around Gally, a cyborg bounty hunter, with engaging storylines across multiple sequels, showcasing excellent world-building and consistent character development.
  • Although the art style may show its age, the manga’s attention to detail in environments and character designs makes it visually impressive, contributing to its enduring appeal.

Funny to think about the fact that this manga doesn’t have an anime adaptation but Hollywood has a movie on it with a 2nd movie already confirmed. While it is a shame that this series doesn’t have an anime adaptation, the fact that this got a Hollywood movie proves how much of a big deal this was back in the day. But I don’t think a lot of people even know about the Battle Angel Alita manga these days so let’s try and change that.

Welcome back to another manga recommendation series. Just like with the anime recommendation series, I wasn’t able to do this series for the past few weeks. This was due to multiple reasons like exams, more pressing news articles to cover, and whatnot. But we are back. And for this article, I wanted to cover something special. So here we are with Battle Angel Alita. Let’s get started.

Introduction

Gunnm or Battle Angel Alita, as it was called in the English release is written and illustrated by Kishiro Yukito. The manga is 9 volumes or 53 chapters long and was serialized from November 1990 to March 1995. It has 2 sequel mangas, Last Order (19 volumes/124 chapters) was serialized from July 2001 to January 2014, and Mars Chronicle which started serialization in October 2014 and is still ongoing. As I mentioned, there is no proper anime adaptation for the series. Just an ONA of 2 episodes. As for the movie, I have not watched it but the reviews don’t look particularly good. So I recommend sticking to the manga.

Plot

I can’t summarize all of the plot here since Last Order and Mars Chronicle exist too. So I will just give you a brief introduction to the series. The series follows Gally, a cyborg who lost her memories of the past but was saved by a doctor, Daisuke Ido. Gally finds out that she was a bounty hunter for the government. And decides to return to that job once again despite Ido’s warnings and the series kicks off after that.

As I said, there is a lot to the plot of this series and I cannot do it justice in this small space. But, the plot for the series is pretty amazing. The series also features some amazing world-building on top of the great storyline. Last Order in particular is quite incredible. Despite being so long, the manga always finds a way to surprise you and the plot always stays engaging. Yes, there are downtimes in the plot but even then the plot manages to keep you engaged.

Characters

Once again, I cannot do justice to the massive cast of characters this manga series has in this short space. But the cast is pretty big and every important character gets their due time in the spotlight and they are fleshed out well. I appreciate the fact that Gally’s character development stays consistent through both of the sequels, Again, Last Order just steals the show in this regard too. I feel like Gally’s character was better in Last Order even compared to the original manga. But that’s just my opinion.

Art

Yes, the art style is starting to show its age at this point. But that doesn’t stop the environments in the manga from being breathtaking. Even the character designs and the details on the characters are really impressive. The art is incredibly detailed in general, you probably won’t even notice the dated art style because of the attention to detail in everything.

Summing Up

Here’s why you should read Battle Angel Alita

  • Amazing plot
  • Awesome world-building
  • A big cast of well-written characters
  • Great environment and character design

That is all for now. Let me know what you guys think in the comments. I wish every single one of you a very, very happy new year and I will take my leave here. See ya!!
