Bleach TYBW Anime Has Completely Transformed Yhwach as a Villain

At a glance:
- Yhwach is a MUCH better villain in the TYBW anime, with the adaptation giving him a far more intimidating presence.
- The anime has expanded his character in some really interesting ways, making him feel much more than just an absurdly powerful final boss.
- Cour 4 has been especially brutal, and I cannot wait to see what the anime does with Yhwach in these final few episodes.

I’ve spoken on this topic a lot over the course of my weekly episode reviews. I even made a similar article back when Cour 2 was still airing, if I recall correctly. It was back when we got the improved flashback for the Soul King. But I do think it is underappreciated just how much better Yhwach is as a villain in the anime. In the manga, he really doesn’t do much after absorbing the Soul King. But the anime goes out of its way to show just how terrifying Yhwach really is. The Bleach TYBW anime’s expanded character development has completely transformed Yhwach, and I really cannot wait to see where this goes.
Yes, today is a Bleach Saturday. So you know that the episode 47 review is coming soon. But I really wanted to take a moment to talk about how diabolical Yhwach is in the anime. Of course, there will be spoilers ahead. But let’s get started.
How Bleach TYBW: The Calamity Improved Yhwach’s Character

The improved backstory certainly helped, but can we talk about how absolutely demonic Yhwach has been in Cour 4? Like, I think it is obvious that he never really cared about the Quincy or the Sternritter. They were all just useful tools to him to exact his revenge and reshape the world the way he wants. And he is hell-bent on breaking Ichigo the way any other villain never was. Byakuya and Ulquiorra were calm and doing their duty; Grimmjow and Kenpachi were just battle maniacs, and Aizen was scary because of the whole “I planned your life” thing. Yhwach, on the other hand, wants to see Ichigo just despair and completely lose his spirit.
It almost feels like he lets Ichigo have momentary wins only to take them away just so that his despair is deeper. Villains usually don’t touch the heroine in shounen shows, but Yhwach did not hold back. He saw Orihime healing Ichigo and just straight up killed her multiple times in very brutal ways. And let’s not forget, he literally beheaded Ichigo in Episode 45. More recently, in Episode 46, he teleported behind Renji as he activated his Bankai and told him that he likes the word “Bankai” because it gives the Shinigami hope. And then he literally sliced Renji up like a vegetable before grabbing Rukia by her face. Episode 46 was so exceedingly brutal. That whole episode made Yhwach way scarier and creepier than before.

Like, I want you to understand, the manga version of Yhwach didn’t have even 10% of this character. He just sat back in his chair and set “traps” for Ichigo in the future. The anime really did make Ichigo’s breakdown way, WAY worse than the manga. I also think that the anime made a very interesting change where Yhwach says that he kept Haschwalth alive just to absorb his power to break Ichigo’s Bankai. But yeah, The Almighty just makes things easier for Yhwach in the anime. While in the manga, that’s all he relied on. SK Yhwach in the anime is just absurdly powerful even without The Almighty.
That is all for now
So yeah, I am very interested in seeing how Yhwach’s character arc concludes in the anime. 4 Episodes to go, and I have no idea what’s waiting for us next. Episode 45 was completely off the rails, and then Episode 46 rigidly snapped back to the manga, even though it still made a lot of improvements. This makes predicting Episode 47 very easy and very hard at the same time. But thankfully, only a few hours remain till Episode 47 airs.
But trust me, the Bleach TYBW anime has done a lot of good character development for Yhwach. Let me know what you guys think in the comments. I will take my leave here. See ya!
