Bocchi the Rock, Anime Recommendation of the Week!

Key points for Anime Recommendation – Bocchi the Rock

  • Bocchi the Rock made a significant impact in 2022, generating a wave of memes and discussions within the anime community.
  • The anime features a basic slice-of-life plot with Bocchi, an introverted guitarist, striving to make friends and form a band. Despite its simplicity, the execution is highly entertaining.
  • The diverse and memorable characters, coupled with quirky animations by CloverWorks, contribute to the anime’s charm. The series offers relatable moments for introverts and a wholesome overall experience.

As 2023 comes to a close, I think it is only fitting to go back in time and look at the anime everyone was talking about around this time in 2022. Bocchi the Rock kind of came out of nowhere and took the community by storm. To this day, a whole year later, it is still not uncommon to spot Bocchi memes here and there. That is the kind of impact this anime had on the community back then.

So let’s go back in time, hit some of that 2022 nostalgia, and talk about Bocchi the Rock today. Welcome back to another edition of our anime recommendation series. I could not do this series for the past weeks because of multiple reasons. But here we are. You know what we are talking about so let’s get started.

Bocchi the Rock is based on the manga of the same name by Hamaji Aki. The manga started sterilization in December 2017 and is still ongoing. As for the anime, it was made by CloverWorks. It is 12 episodes long and came out in the Fall 2022 season. There is also a movie summarizing the events of the season but if you have time, watching the season is just better. No confirmed season 2 as of yet, but I have a feeling we will see a Season 2 announcement soon enough.

The plot of the anime revolves around the titular Bocchi. Bocchi is great at playing guitar and even has her own YouTube channel with pretty good views. But in real life, she is an extreme introvert. But even then, she wants to make friends and perform with a band one day. Luckily for her, she catches the eye of an outgoing drummer, Nijika one day who invites Bocchi to join her band. Despite the obstacles in their way, the girls manage to pull through things with their combined efforts and love for music.

The plot is pretty basic, as you’d expect from a SoL anime. But man is it entertaining as hell. Bocchi’s responses to different situations are pure meme materials. That is why you see Bocchi memes around to this day. A simple plot with good execution can do wonderful things and this anime is the perfect example of that.

Man, every single character in this anime is memorable as hell because of how colorful their personalities are and how well they all go together. Even Bocchi’s little sister is a memorable character despite having a total screen time of like 10 minutes in all episodes combined LOL. But that is not all, we are also blessed with some great character development for Bocchi herself. And goes without saying, that all of us real-life introverts can relate to Bocchi on a spiritual level. Might be different for you but man, some of her monologs hit way too close to home for me. sob

Animations and Soundtracks

CLoverWorks did an amazing job as always. It is thanks to them that we have so many Bocchi memes. They just embraced the weirdness and went ham with it. From Bocchi glitching out of reality to her bursting like a balloon, they never fail to deliver. Every episode is full of fun stuff like that. The opening and ending themes are pretty memorable as well.

Summing Up

Quick points for why you should watch Bocchi the Rock:

  • Wholesome Plot
  • Great characters and interactions
