I’ve been quite open about how much I have been enjoying Can a Boy-Girl Friendship Survive. I like the character dynamics, and most rom-coms don’t have the guts to show an MC outright reject a girl five times, as of Episode 9. And even though I liked the premise of ‘Can a Boy-Girl Friendship Survive’ Episode 9, I really don’t like the ending of this episode, and by extension, the future episodes also concern me now. I liked this show for how off the walls it could be at times and yet it seems like the upcoming episodes will be quite predictable.

So yeah, welcome back to yet another article about Can a Boy-Girl Friendship Survive and today we are talking about Episode 9 in particular. My full review for the series will be a couple of weeks later around Episode 11 release but for now, let’s talk about Episode 9.

Why did I not like Can a Boy-Girl Friendship Survive Episode 9?

The premise of the episode is good enough. The episode is about Yuu accepting that he only cares about accessories when he made them for Himari and him dealing with all the school stuff. And yeah, most of the episode is pretty good. Not being able to make accessories anymore did hit Yuu hard but he tried his best to be mature about it and stop until graduation. When everyone you know calls you a scammer and gives you a weird look, it affects you, man. And all that is good.

I even like the little moment between him and Rion when they’re hanging out playing games and Yuu accepts that he felt nothing when he saw that random girl break the accessory he made in the last episode. But the thing is, I don’t like the ending. Rion’s older sister is such a cool character, she instantly owns the scene, she commands your attention and even Hibari is forced to kneel in front of her. But why did the plot boil down to “make the best accessory you can to save Himari”, like come on bro.

That is such a cliche choice for the final arc of a season. It makes the upcoming few episodes so damn predictable. Yeah, we all know Yuu will struggle and end up making an accessory that impresses Kureha or she will be impressed by his resolve and decide not to take Himari away. Why did we need this? I wish that the show just let Yuu dwell on his indecisiveness when it comes to Himari and figure things out for himself. I really liked it when Kureha called out Yuu on his indecisiveness and hypocrisy.

But yeah, ultimately I just hope that the ending is at least satisfying. This anime hasn’t been afraid to shift the status quo so far, I hope it doesn’t just return to where things started like most other rom-coms.
