Cautious Hero, Anime Recommendation of the Week!

Article at a glance:

  • Cautious Hero cleverly parodies and then subverts typical isekai tropes, culminating in a surprising and deep conclusion.
  • From Seiya’s overly cautious antics to Ristarte’s hilarious reactions, the characters add layers of humor and depth to the story.
  • With its availability on platforms like YouTube and its blend of humor and engaging plot, Cautious Hero offers an entertaining viewing experience for anime fans.

I am quite surprised that I haven’t talked about this anime in a recommendation article before. Cautious Hero starts as a parody of the isekai genre, constantly making fun of the common isekai tropes. But during the last third of the season, it turns into a clever subversion of the genre, giving us a surprisingly deep and serious ending, something you would not expect given the nature of the show. The twist at the end is cleverly foreshadowed. And man, this anime really needs a Season 2.

So yeah, welcome back to another edition of our anime recommendation series! This week we are talking about the awesome Cautious Hero. I watched this anime way back when. But the more random isekais I watch, the more I appreciate this anime for at least trying something new while being funny as all hell. So let’s talk about it.

Introduction

Cautious Hero is based on the LN of the same name by Tuchihi Light and illustrated by Toyota Saori. It was serialized online since February 2017 and currently has 7 volumes. Unfortunately, the LN has been on hiatus since December 2019. As for the anime, it came out in the Fall 2019 season and it was made by White Fox studio. It is just 12 episodes long and is available for free on YouTube through Muse Asia if you live in South-East Asia or use a VPN. Lastly, no announcements regarding Season 2 have been made so far.

plot

I won’t spoil the ending here because it is really good and it works better as a surprise. Other than that though, it is a fairly standard isekai with the added twist that Gods are required to summon certain humans to save different worlds. And depending on the rank of the world they saved, they get a “promotion”, which allows them to tackle harder worlds in return. The anime makes fun of all the usual isekai tropes you can think of while gradually building and hinting towards the ending twist since the very first episode.

Characters

Seiya is one of the biggest trolls I have ever seen lol. It is right there in the title. he is strong but he is overly cautious. But his overly cautious nature makes sense when we learn his backstory near the end. Ristarte is mostly clueless about Seiya but she acts as the perfect bounce point for the series’s humor. Her voice actor nailed the performance and almost every reaction from her is pure meme material. Other than them, we have a whole bunch of side characters, again, playing and parodying multiple character archetypes with them, is hilarious.

Animations and Soundtracks

The production quality of the anime is fairly average. The animations aren’t that good or anything, they get the job done and that is enough. Again, they did a great job with Ristarte’s expressions though lol, they are always funny. And lastly, the opening theme for this anime is quite awesome too.

Summing Up

Here’s why you should watch Cautious Hero

  • Funny and entertaining
  • Amazing voice performances
  • Clever Parody of usual isekai tropes
  • Surprisingly good ending

That is all for now! Let me know what you guys think in the comments. I will take my leave here. Again, off to play some more New Vegas! See ya!
