Chainsaw Man Reze-Arc Movie Review: I LOVED It

Article at a glance:

  • Chainsaw Man Reze-Arc hits theaters with zero censorship and MAPPA’s signature cinematic animation—an absolute treat on the big screen.
  • The movie delivers a tight, impactful story that balances wholesome moments with Fujimoto’s trademark heartbreak.
  • Stunning visuals, top-tier voice acting, and a killer soundtrack make this one of the best anime film experiences in recent years.

Well, I just got back from the theatres and I watched Chainsaw Man Reze-Arc. First off, I am SO happy that they released it without any cuts or censorship in my country. So I just HAD to support it for that initiative alone. Secondly, Mappa animations in a theatre, absolute cinema. Yeah, I had so much fun that I got back home and jumped straight to writing my review for the Chainsaw Man Reze-Arc Movie LOL.

Yes, I loved every moment of this film. It was short and concise, little to no filler, beautifully animated, and thoroughly traumatizing. Being a Fujimoto manga protagonist is nothing but suffering, and we love his stories for it. And yeah, Mappa cooked again, probably locked their animators in an office on bare minimum substance to draw the art for this movie for 5 years or so.

But yeah, welcome back to another review, and today, we are talking about the Chainsaw Man Reze-Arc movie! There will be spoilers ahead. I can’t really review this film without spoiling a whole bunch of things. PLEASE go check out this movie in the theaters if you can, though, it is well worth the ticket price.

Plot

The plot for the Bomb Devil arc itself is nothing special. It is a pretty standard affair of a girl getting close to Denji, but she wants to kill him. We’ve been there, right? Literally every girl Denji knows has tried to kill him at some point. As always, the devil is in the details. You have this gut feeling that Reze IS going to betray Denji at some point, but here’s the thing: the arc baits you in with some brilliant, wholesome moments between them. Just enough to make you wish “maybe this could work out” before snatching everything away from your grasp.

It is an age-old trick, but it is executed so well that it just works. The pacing is tight; even the lighthearted scenes in the first half are important for establishing characters and are put to good use. Also, I am so glad that this movie doesn’t have a flashback or something lol. I am kind of over flashbacks in movies after the Demon Slayer movie. The only major flaw of the plot is that it is a bit predictable, and that’s it.

Characters

Reze

Probably the best-written character in this arc. I mean, the arc is literally named after her; of course, she’d better be the best character here. One of my friends asked me if Reze is good or evil, and honestly, I have no idea how to answer that, and that’s how I know she’s a well-written, complex character. She had been “using” Denji from the start, but I think we all know that she probably started feeling something for him at some point, too. Since she did try to go back to meet him at the end.

Reina Uchida’s portrayal of Reze captures every different aspect of her personality SO well. Chainsaw Man has a lot of good voice actors, but Reina Uchida as Reze might just be my favorite role so far. She gets Reze, and her voice adds so much more charm to her character. Reze has so many good character moments throughout this movie, and despite what she does, you can’t help but fall for her. Fujimoto just leaves you wondering what a normal life could’ve been if Denji and Reze met under different circumstances, and I love it.

Denji

Denji has a few really good character moments in the movie, too. This is the point where he starts to understand what love really means outside of just plain lust. I like that he doesn’t really lust after Reze, but he falls for her in a more normal way. Of course, Makima is the one who triggers this development, but it ends up playing a big part in this arc overall.

Denji and Reze’s dynamic throughout the film and how it shifts over time is really well done. From Reze’s intro to the “confession” scene to the ending, all of Reze’s major scenes affect Denji as well. But yeah, Denji just can’t catch a break. Bro has kissed girls twice, and both of those times were traumatizing in completely different ways. As I said, being a Fujimoto manga protagonist is literally just pain.

The Others

I LOVED the dynamic Denji and Beam went on to develop. Denji isn’t very friendly towards him at first, but soon he warms up and they’re pretty much best friends, and their interactions are really funny. Surprisingly, Angel has a pretty good character arc in this movie, thanks to Aki, despite his limited appearances. Despite this being a very Denji and Reze-centered arc, the side characters get a surprising amount of love, and I respect that.

I got to watch Makima in glorious 4k and I couldn’t be happier hahaha. She doesn’t appear a whole lot, but as always, she remains an important and mysterious character. And of course, she kicks off Denji’s character arc for this movie too, so there’s also that.

Production

Again, we come to the obvious part of the review, of course, Chainsaw Man Reze Arc movie has insane animations. The last fight alone made the whole movie worth it. In the anime, you could see animation flaws here and there, but not here. It really does feel like Mappa locked up their employees for AGES to make this movie. Every single frame is SO well drawn, and the CGI elements are integrated beautifully. Take the opening scene of the movie, for example, it is literally just an animation of manga panels AS IS in black and white, and it looks STRIKING.

Kenshi Yonezu SERVES once again with a banger opening theme, Iris Out. And the soundtracks for the movie in general are awesome. The music during the final fight scenes goes so hard. Absolutely no complaints in the production department. It is a perfect adaptation of the manga, the animations are good, the art looks amazing, and the voice acting and soundtracks are top-notch. I couldn’t ask for more.

Summing Up

Here are my final review scores for Chainsaw Man Reze-Arc Movie:

  • Plot – 8/10
  • Characters – 10/10
  • Production – 10/10
  • Enjoyment – 10/10
  • Overall – 9.5/10

And yeah, that’s it. I enjoyed the hell out of this movie, and I just had to support an uncensored anime film lol. So yeah, let me know what you guys think in the comments. I will take my leave here. I am off to play Dying Light with my friends. See ya!
