Clannad, Anime Recommendation of the Week!

Key points for Anime Recommendation – Clannad:

  • Clannad and its sequel, After Story, deliver a powerful emotional experience that can leave a lasting impact on viewers, making it a must-watch for those seeking a deeply moving anime.
  • The anime excels in character development, particularly with the main characters Tomoya and Nagisa, as well as supporting characters like Kyou, Ryou, and Tomoyo. The small main cast allows for strong connections and relatability.
  • Produced by Kyoto Animation, Clannad boasts a timeless art style that remains charming even years later. The soundtrack, including the touching ending theme of “After Story,” adds to the emotional resonance of the series.

Oh yeah, here to inflict some more trauma this week. Clannad is one of the 4 anime that ever made me cry and oh boy this is probably the most depressing among that bunch. This anime, especially After Story is so good at playing with your emotions that it is almost unfair. Do not watch this anime till you are prepared for an emotionally heavy experience. I won’t spoil anything, you just have to experience this anime for yourself.

So welcome back to another edition of our anime recommendation series. This week we are talking about Clannad. Now, since this anime is based on a Visual Novel, it has quite a few spin-offs and alternate-ending specials. You don’t have to worry about any of those. So let’s just get started,

Introduction

As I just mentioned, Clannad is based on the VN of the same name developed by Key. The VN was originally released for Windows back in 2004. As for the anime, you will want to watch the original series and then After Story. After that, you are free to watch whichever spin-off/alternate version you like. The original series and After Story are the “main story” You can experience them just fine without knowing anything about the VN. Both the original series and After Story are made by Kyoto Animation and are 23 and 24 episodes long respectively.

Plot

How do I even explain how good this anime’s plot is without spoiling anything? Well, on the surface, this anime is a typical romance/slice-of-life. Even without the “twists” this anime is incredibly effective at conveying its emotional weight because of how it handles growing. The story follows Tomoya. We start from high school and follow him through his adulthood. How despite stumbling, he eventually finds his footing and even has a family of his own.

The anime’s plot is emotionally driven and handles the theme of growing up perfectly. The story is relatable and emotionally heavy even before the “twists” happen. And after the “twists” in After Story, you will never look at this anime the same way.

Characters

The characters in this anime are incredible. The anime has 2 seasons to flesh them all out and it does that very well. Of course, Tomoya and Nagisa get the most character development. But the others like Kyou, Ryou, Tomoyo, etc. all get their character development as well. The anime has a small main cast and it uses that to its advantage. Connection to characters is very important for an emotionally heavy story like this and you get just that. I have a feeling that everyone can relate to at least some point of Tomoya’s journey because of how well it is portrayed.

Animations and Soundtracks

What can I say? It is KyoAni in its prime. Even now KyoAni can do no wrong but back then, it was especially true. Just look at the art style of this anime. Despite being like 15+ years old, this anime will never look dated because of its unique art style. It still looks as charming as ever. As for the soundtrack, I consciously avoid listening to any music from this anime because I know I will cry.

“After Story” has a touching ending theme. Once you understand its meaning, you can’t watch it without crying.

Summing Up

Here’s why you should watch Clannad and Clannad: After Story:

  • Good plot
  • Amazing characters
  • Relatable
  • EMOTIONAL DAMAGE

This anime starts as a usual high school story but ends up becoming one of the most depressing animes out there and I have nothing but adoration for how well-crafted this whole experience is. That is all for now, let me know what you guys think in the comments. I will take my leave here… I have to cry a little T_T. See ya.
