I heard about this series a lot over the years I’ve spent in the community. And then I watched the Code Breaker anime and didn’t feel it that much. Sure, it was cool, don’t get me wrong but, I failed to see why it was talked about so much.

And then I read the manga when someone told me to. And man, my opinion on this series really improved after the read. I really enjoyed reading the manga even though the anime was fresh in my mind.

So welcome back to another edition of our manga recommendation series. This week we are talking about Code Breaker. So let’s get started!

Code breaker | Romantis

Introduction

Code Breaker was written and illustrated by Kamijyo Akimine. It was serialized in the weekly Shounen Magazine from June 2008 to July 2013. It is 230 chapters or 26 volumes long. As I mentioned, the manga does have an anime adaptation but, the adaptation is rather bad so I don’t really recommend it. It is a dark, gritty supernatural shounen manga. If you are looking for some edgy shounen with interesting points, this is the right manga.

Plot

The plot is about the titular Code Breakers – A group of teenagers who got superpowers thanks to some experiments. And they believe in the saying “An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, and evil for evil’. Our protagonist is a girl called Sakura who witnesses one of these Code Breakers killing a bunch of criminals. And she is determined to drag them back, Oogami in particular to the right path.

Code: Breaker 3 (Code Breaker, # 3) by Akimine Kamijyo | Goodreads

The plot of Code Breaker is pretty deep and intense. Yes, it comes off as edgy on the surface, you know, a bunch of guys fighting for what they think is justice. But the manga does explore these concepts further and this leads to some really good character moments. I like how the plot starts because of HItomi but over time it becomes so much more than just him.

Characters

Check out the manga on Amazon!

Oogami and Sakura are a really good pair to lead the series. Their characters complement each other well and their chemistry is developed really well over time. The character development Oogami, in particular, gets thanks to Sakura is really well done. As I mentioned, the series exists because of Hitomi. And as you might expect, Hitomi is quite the enigma. I don’t want to spoil much but his character is really well written too, the background and all.

Art

Code Breaker has some pretty good art as well. The fights are cool and intense. The abilities look awesome, especially Oogami’s blue flames look amazing. I like the character designs too. So no complaints here.

Why should you read Code Breaker?

Quick pointers on why you should check out this manga:

That is all for now. Let me know what you guys think in the comments. Code Breaker is a really cool manga and hopefully, this puts more eyes on it. With that said, I will take my leave here. See ya!!
