Cosmic Princess Kaguya Returns with MX4D, 4DX Screenings in September

Cosmic Princess Kaguya! is set to return to Japanese theaters starting September 18, featuring a variety of special screenings. After ending its initial theatrical run on June 18, the film will be shown in MX4D, 4DX, SCREENX, ULTRA 4DX, Dolby Atmos, and other immersive formats. Regular screenings will also continue alongside these new experiences.

The movie first premiered on Netflix on January 22, quickly earning a spot among Japan’s Top 10 movies on the platform. Its limited theatrical debut took place on February 20 across 19 venues and gradually expanded to 100 locations by March. Over multiple weekends, it consistently ranked in the Top 10 at the Japanese box office. By mid-May, Cosmic Princess Kaguya! had earned over 2.5 billion yen (around $15.5 million USD).

Cosmic Princess Kaguya! offers a fresh yuri retelling of The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, set in a near-future world. The story follows high school student Iroha Sakayori, who accidentally becomes roommates with an alien named Kaguya. As Kaguya rises to fame as a streaming star with Iroha as her producer, they encounter Yachiyo Runami, the popular administrator of the virtual world Tsukuyomi. Throughout the story, the looming reality of Kaguya’s return to the moon shadows their journey.

Shingo Yamashita, known for his work on Chainsaw Man and Jujutsu Kaisen, directed the film in his feature debut. Studio Colorido and Yamashita’s Studio Chromato collaborated on the animation production, delivering vibrant and detailed visuals.

Besides the film, Cosmic Princess Kaguya! is available as a manga and light novel published by KADOKAWA. The movie has also attracted strong fan support, with a crowdfunding campaign for an online appreciation event exceeding its target by over 4000%.

In April, Netflix updated the movie with the popular “ray Cho Kaguya-hime! Version” music video, featuring new animated footage that continues the story after the film’s ending. This renewed interest sets the stage for its theatrical comeback with exciting new screening formats.
