Days With My Stepsister Review – Do NOT Let the Title Fool You

Article at a glance:
- “Days with My Stepsister” excels in portraying the awkwardness of remarriages and the emotional impact on teenagers through its character-driven narrative.
- Both Yuta and Saki show meaningful growth, with Saki’s journey from emotional hardship to healing being particularly well-crafted.
- The anime benefits from impressive animation quality and solid soundtracks, enhancing the overall viewing experience.

This is one of those cases like DanMachi where you should not judge the show by the title, While yes, the title is more accurate compared to DanMachi, the title also comes with a negative connotation. And I don’t think this show deserves that. I had been waiting to review Days with my Stepsister for a while and here we are. I more or less have an idea of what is coming. So this review will be based on that. Of course, I will not spoil anything that will be in the upcoming episodes.
So yeah, welcome back to another review and today we are talking about Days with my Stepsister. I know that this anime won’t be for everyone but I ended up liking it a lot more than I expected. So let’s talk about it.

Plot
Again, not much to say about the plot like most rom-coms or SOL animes. This one isn’t even anything convoluted like Domestic Girlfriend. But the slower, more deliberate pacing of the plot works so much better in this anime compared to other slow-burn romances because of how character-focused this one is. The slower pacing and the anime in general do a great job of portraying how awkward remarriages can be, especially if the children are teenagers.
Both Yuta and Saki watched their biological parents divorce leading to some tough times till Yuta’s father and Saki’s mother met and decided to move in. All this affects the character arcs of Yuta and especially Saki so deeply.
Characters
As I alluded to in the previous section, this anime is really character-focused. The awkwardness of adjusting to a new family, and the issues that come with being raised by a single parent in a rough situation are all really well done here. Romance animes often suck at giving a good character to the male MC but in the Summer 2024 season, all romance anime male MCs actually have pretty good characters. Yuta is no different. He is responsible, reliable, polite and he is very observant when it comes to others.

Saki though, gets a lot more character development than him because she was in a much worse space mentally. Both Yuta and Saki were forced to grow up to support their parents after the divorce. But this hit Saki harder and she finally started to move on from that place in this week’s episode. And I like how long it took because feelings like that don’t go away quickly. And the way that Yuta and Saki slowly realized that they liked each other was also well done.
The cast overall is quite small but it is a very well-written one. Of course, we have Yomiuri-senpai, my beloved. Her dynamic with Yuta is so good. And then we have Narasaka and both of the parents, Saki’s mom in particular are quite well-written too.

Animations And Soundtracks
Literally, all anime in this season have an above-average animation quality. And it is no different with this one. The animations are frankly amazing. A few years ago, a show like this wouldn’t have gotten animations like this but I am glad it did. The soundtracks are decent too, the voice work is great and yeah, the production in general is quite good.
Summing Up
Here are my final review scores for Days With My Stepsister
- Plot – 7/10
- Characters – 9/10
- Animations – 8/10
- Soundtracks – 7/10
- Enjoyment – 8/10
- Overall – 8/10
So yeah, those were my thoughts and opinions Days with my Stepsister, I know that this anime will be too gloomy for some people. But if you stick with it, the character writing is honestly really good. With that said, I will take my leave here. See ya!
