Key points for Manga Recommendation – Even if You Slit My Mouth
- “Even if You Slit My Mouth” may sound violent, but the manga surprises with a mostly harmless and unorthodox romance plot.
- The story involves Miroku, a supernatural being from Japanese folklore, facing a loss of power due to diminishing belief. The contractual marriage and the challenge posed by Sano Kouichi add depth to the romance.
- Well-developed characters, including the central couple and a strong supporting cast, coupled with impressive art and unique character designs, make this manga a must-read for romance enthusiasts.
Ok, I know that the title of this manga sounds weird and bloody. But, trust me, it is quite misleading as this manga is mostly harmless romance. Yes, a manga with a name like Even if You Slit My Mouth is actually a romance manga.
And it is a rather unorthodox romance as well which makes it fun to read. So welcome back to another edition of our manga recommendation series. This week we are talking about Even if You Slit My Mouth! So let’s get started.
Introduction
Even if You Slit My Mouth is written and illustrated by Kajimoto Akari. It has been serialized online on Shounen Jump+ since June 2020. It is still ongoing. No anime adaptation or anything like that yet. Currently, the manga has 76 chapters and it is available through Shueisha’s Manga PLUS platform in English.
Plot
Miroku is a supernatural being from Japanese folklore, she is a woman with a slitted mouth and a literal ear-to-ear smile. But she is slowly losing her powers because of decreasing belief in her folklore. On top of that, she is also roped into a contractual marriage with Sano Kouichi. The Sano family is responsible for the continued existence of supernatural beings. Kouichi presents a condition to Miroku, if she manages to scare him even once before he turns 18, he will call off the marriage.
You can kind of guess how things go after this. It is a romance manga after all. Still, the whole supernatural side of things adds an interesting layer to the plot. It is deeper than you’d expect given the description of the plot.
Characters
The relationship between Kouichi and Miroku has been pretty well-developed so far. They’ve been growing closer ever so slightly with each chapter and their character development is quite well done as well. These two along with a good support cast of characters like Uda, Mikoto, Mary, Saya, etc. keep things interesting and fresh. Characters are the most important thing for a romance manga I think this manga nails them pretty well.
Art
The art in this manga is pretty awesome. Since supernatural beings exist, the author can go crazy with the character designs and they did. I love the character designs in this manga and the art style in general is really good. Just go look at some of the volume covers for this manga, they all look so cool.
Why should you read Even if You Slit My Mouth?
- Good plot
- Great characters
- Awesome art
- Rather unique for a romance manga
That is all for now!
