Frieren Season 2 Review – Another Banger!

Article at a glance:

  • A worthy follow-up that retains Frieren’s emotional depth and refinement, even if it doesn’t quite reach Season 1’s masterpiece highs.
  • A more episodic structure with fewer sustained arcs makes parts of the season feel slightly less impactful.
  • Strong characters, standout moments like the Divine Revolte arc, and top-tier production still carry the experience.

Well, it is finally time. I had been working on this review for about 3 days. I can finally work on my other review after this. It is no secret that I really enjoyed Frieren Season 2, and yes, this review will reflect that. That said, Season 2 does fall a bit flat in some aspects compared to Season 1. No major issues, the anime still remains extremely refined and meaningful to watch. But considering just how much of a masterpiece Season 1 was, there are some things in Season 2 that just don’t hit the same.

This review will be pretty long as is, so I won’t drag the introduction any further than I need to. Full disclosure, though, there will be spoilers ahead as I want to discuss certain plot details. So move forward with that in mind. With that said, welcome to my review of Frieren Season 2. And this will be a long one, so strap in. Let’s get started,

Plot

So let’s start with my issues in Season 2. Since there are just 10 episodes and only 1 major arc, there is no overarching story in Season 2, and as a result, quite a few episodes end up feeling very filler-y. Sure, there’s world-building in every episode, so you get to see something new or something cool in all of them, but this filler-y feeling is definitely more noticeable in Season 2. This didn’t happen in Season 1 because we were first building a party, and then once we had our main party, we had at least 2 more major arcs in quick succession.

I get it, that’s what Frieren is about. The episodic journey through a vast fantasy world, seeing all that is interesting in the world. But Frieren often works best when it has sustained arcs to rely on or episodes to build towards something. Even the best episodes of Season 2 come from the Divine Revolte arc. Season 2 does not help itself by doing 2 stories in one episode. It takes from the emotional payoff of a lot of stories, and also it feels weird seeing one character in the first half, with them being nowhere in sight in the second half.

That is not to say Season 2 is bad, by the way. The Divine Revolte arc alone carries Season 2 on its back. Aside from that, I really like how they go out of their way to show again and again how dangerous the Northern Lands are. We also had a decent bit of world-building with the story of the Hero of the North being a particular highlight. Season 2 still has all the strengths of Season 1; it’s just that some aspects are not as hard-hitting as before.

Characters

I think Genau was the character that stood out the most in this Season to me. He was an interesting character in Season 1 as is, but finally getting his backstory in the Divine Revolte arc really expands on his character. We really understand how Genau thinks and why he is the way he is, and while I’m on the topic, Revolte is such a cool villain too. He doesn’t speak much, but Shinichiro Miki’s charismatic, smooth voice really elevates what should’ve been an otherwise standard “monster of the week.”

Glad to see Methode back in the same arc as well. She also got a bit of a background in Season 2. Her instant switch-up from goofy shenanigans to a serious mage was pretty entertaining. Sure, her background expansion was nowhere as detailed as Genau’s, but still, it is good getting teasers of potential future content early lol. Aside from that, Fern and Stark get a lot of cute moments together in this season. I know the show wants to take its time with their relationship, but it would be nice to see a bit more payoff soon.

Frieren is still Frieren; she doesn’t change in any meaningful way throughout Season 2, and she doesn’t need to. She is the “guide” in this journey, not the person undertaking it. But she did not fail to give us some more very iconic memes yet again.

Production

Again, I think it is the most obvious part of the review because Frieren Season 2 is really well-made. Madhouse cooked once again with the visuals, presentation, and music. The voice acting was once again perfect. As I said, characters like Revolte are really elevated by their voice performances. Another thing I appreciate is how physical the fight with Revolte felt. Stark and Genau are both close-range fighters, so they had an absolute classic against Revolte. The whole thing was really directed and presented.

The opening theme is pretty good as well. While I don’t like it as much as Season 1’s second opening, the animation for the whole thing is amazing. And of course, the background score once again is immaculate. So absolutely no complaints with the production.

Summing Up

Here are my final review scores for Frieren Season 2

  • Plot – 8/10
  • Characters – 9/10
  • Production – 10/10
  • Enjoyment – 9/10
  • Overall – 9/10

See, what did I tell you? Despite the minor issues, Season 2 is still incredible. I just wish that the narrative were more focused. But regardless, it was a worthy follow-up to the absolute impact Season 1 left behind. Season 3 was announced as soon as Season 2 ended, and Season 3 looks fun. We have to wait about a year and a half for it, though, so I will see you in October 2027 when Frieren Season 3 comes out. See ya!

Of course, that’s a joke. I’ve got a ton more reviews in the pipeline. Meanwhile, check out our full guide for the upcoming Spring 2026 season here!
