This has to be one of the best weeks of the Fall 2023 season so far. After taking a breather last week, most animes are back with a banger episode this week. Everything from the shock of our seemingly innocent elf grandma being called Frieren the Slayer to Golin Slayer laughing. This week was full of unexpected moments.
Not only that but Shield Hero had a very emotionally intensive episode as well. Mf Ghost showed us some really cool racing, Ragna’s shocking past interaction with Ultimatia was revealed and Dr. Stone just had one of the best episodes of the series.
So let’s talk about all that and more. This is the 5th week of the Fall 2023 season, this week was full of amazing stuff including the Frieren the Slayer reveal, so let’s take a look at my favorite episodes from this week.
MF Ghost Episode 5
Finally got to see some proper racing in the series. The only thing we saw before that was a time trial and that ain’t a race. I love how much bigger the races have become. The races are no longer street battles one-on-one, it is not a full-on professional competitionΒ Even aside from Kanata, the race was full of action and I can’t wait to see how it will finally end.
Also, Takumi Fujiwara, the legendary MC of Initial D was mentioned in this episode! Not only that, but he also taught Kanata in England! That is such a cool connection!
Goblin Slayer Season 2 Episode 4
This episode was awesome for multiple reasons. Of course, it had some awesome Goblin Slayer band action. Some creative ways to kill Goblins and everything you’d expect from a Golblin Slayer episode but it had so much more too! I really showcased just of efficient of a strategist Goblin Slayer is, it served as a great character moment for the red-hiared kid and he left on his own journey.
Goblin Slayer looked so happy that he was able to save another soul from falling prey to the vicious of revenge. And stop the kid from becoming like him. Also, Goblin Slayer actually laughed n this episode. The person who almost never shows any emotions actually laughed in joy. How cool is that! Fun episode!
Dr. Stone New World Part 2 Episode 3
This episode has to be one of the best episodes in the series. I won’t spoil it much since it is connected to episode 2 as well. But what Chrome and Kohaku did last week opened up a lot of doors for Senku and friends. They even managed to snag a powerful ally within the island.
Once again, Gen was the highlight of this episode. His cheap negotiation tactics, cheesy dialog, and stupid expressions made a serious negotiation scene entertaining as hell to watch. The ramifications of this episode are going to be huge and these past two episodes basically changed the course of the whole arc. It will be very interesting to see how things go from here.
Ragna Crimson Episode 5
I was expecting to see a big fight this episode but we didn’t get that. What we did get what more info on the “future Ranga” and his encounter with Ultimatia and the other 9 Dragon Lords. That whole section was very interesting in and of itself but we got some pretty cool info on the workings of the Dragon cult as well. I really like the idea of having Dragons be more like vampires in this anime.
Lastly, Ultimatia deserves credit. Her writing has been really good so far. The moment you hear her speak, you know something is wrong. She has killed thousands of people if not millions, yet she acts like she could do no evil. Also, she is batshit insane. The character work in this show is awesome and Crimson and Ultimatia are perfect examples of that. I can’t spoil it but the identity reveal of the Dragon God was really shocking too but that explained a lotΒ of things about this anime.
Shield Hero Season 3 Episode 4
Man, this episode did a fantastic job of showcasing how messed up the human mind can be at times. Shield Hero is great at showing us that kind of stuff. We got to see just how bad the Spirit Tortoise arc had been for the 4 heroes. Both Motoyasu and Ren are in their most emotionally vulnerable state. Motoyasu decides to cope with his issues in a really messed up way too.
Ren used to be the sensible guy among the 3 heroes aside from Naofumi but the loss of his comrades has left him in dire straights and a constant feeling of denial. A certain someone is more than happy to use a vulnerable Ren like that for her own goals. Also, I wish that they adapted the full encounter between Naofumi and Ren. What we got wasn’t bad but it was way more badass in the LN. This episode really hammered home how twisted this show can get at times.
Frieren the Slayer Episode 8
We finally know what “Sousou no Frieren” means. The anime is nomrally slow and thoughtful with a touch of melancholy but with the recent episodes, things really took a dark turn. Frieren tells us about the true nature of the demons and yet, you don’t want to believe it for a while. But then it happens, Frieren was right, all demons are nutjobs and should not be trusted at all under any circumstance, Also, she is called Frierent the Slayer because she killed the largest number of demons during the war.
Aside from some more world-building and this unexpected edge to the episodes, the episodes had some decent character development too. Especially for the town’s chief. And for Frieren as well who is just confident that her pupils are strong enough to deal with the remaining demons. Amazing episode, definitely among my favorite episodes of the series yet along with episode 7!
That is all for now!
