From Bureaucrat to Villainess… What did I Just Watch?

Article at a glance:

  • Despite the overdone villainess/otome isekai setup, the twist of the protagonist being a reincarnated old man adds a refreshing comedic angle.
  • Animation feels dated with flat designs and lack of shadow detail, though the colors and opening sequence are redeeming features.
  • Episode 1 delivers humor and charm, mainly through the protagonist’s fatherly perspective, making it an unexpectedly fun watch despite its flaws.

I need to stop this habit of watching random shows whenever a new season rolls around for “content.” I could’ve been watching the latest episode of Ave Mujica and talking about that, but nope. I am sitting here doing an article on From Bureaucrat to Villainess. And the worst part is that I found this show to be kind of fun. Over the years I have had some absolutely horrid shows. This is not one of them, despite my issues with it, despite the absurd premise, this anime is actually funny.

So sorry, Ave Mujica, you will need to wait another week to get your article. Today we are talking about From Bureaucrat to Villainess for some godforsaken reason. And you, my dear reader, are going nowhere because this will be an entertaining read. Let’s talk about it,

What did I think of From Bureaucrat to Villainess?

Well as the name suggests this one of the villainess/otome game animes. Now, I don’t hate this sub-genre of isekai because some animes I really like are variations of this sub-genre. But so far, the only thing new this anime brings to the table is the fact that the villainess here is a reincarnated old man. I uh… it is just so cliche. The man had a daughter and all in his previous life too so it feels a little weird thinking of him as a young girl now. And then there are the animations.

Ho boy, the animations feel like I was sent back in 2015 or something. They are so damn flat. There is no shadow detail at all in this show. it is like shadows don’t exist at all. I usually praise character designs in fantasy/isekais but I can’t even do that here. The character designs are just uninspired and fall into the trends we have seen over and over again. And even putting that aside, the art is just very rough. At least the colors are pleasing to the eye. That’s the only saving grace of the visuals. Oh yeah, they also made a pretty cool opening animation, I guess.

But, the thing is, despite all that, I kind of enjoyed the episode. Despite the cliche premise, it works surprisingly well. It is also refreshing to see a protagonist acting like a proper adult on account of being one previously. I also find it funny how Kenzaburou views everyone around him as his “children” and I mean yeah, he was a father in his previous life. This makes for some good comedy here and there and ended up being the main reason I enjoyed the episode.

That is all for now

Given the amount of cliches in episode 1 alone, I have a general idea of where this show will go and I don’t think I’ll like it. But the fact that episode 1 of From Bureaucrat to Villainess was surprisingly fun. So who knows, I may check it out after a few weeks to see how it is doing. But yeah, with that said, I will take my leave here. See ya!
