Gachiakuta, Put This on Your Radar

Article at a glance:

  • Gachiakuta manga by Urana Kei is being adapted into an anime by studio Bones, directed by Fumihiko Suganuma.
  • The manga excels in world-building and features a unique power system, focusing on a revenge plot involving a massive pit called the Abyss where the protagonist, Rudo, battles trash monsters.
  • A special panel showcasing behind-the-scenes content from Bones will be held at Anime Expo 2024 in LA, featuring a producer from Aver and an editor from Kodansha.

I read a bit of Gachiakuta last year. I haven’t kept up with the manga but I can tell you that it is weird and different. Bones is the perfect studio to animate something like this. This manga has a clear Made in Abyss inspiration, but despite the similar concept, the execution is very different. This manga is not as dark or serious as Made in Abyss on the account of being a Shounen instead of a Seinen. Still, there are certain things that this manga does very well and I think its shortcomings can be addressed through an anime adaptation.

So welcome back to another edition of Put This on Your Radar. The series where I talk about upcoming anime that caught my eye. As far as Gachiakuta goes, I already knew of the manga but the fact that it is being adapted by Bones makes me happier. So let’s talk about it today.

What do we know about the Gachiakuta anime?

Well, the anime will be based on the manga of the same name by Urana Kei. It has been serialized in Kadokawa’s Weekly Shounen Magazine since February 2022. As I mentioned, the anime adaptation will be made by Bones. Recently, the production company opened an official website for the anime and we got a bunch of announcements through it. At Bones, the anime will be helmed by Fumihiko Suganuma. They’ve previously worked on stuff like Sirius and Shirobako. I am pretty sure this is their first directorial work.

Aside from that, it was also announced that in the 2024 Anime Expo, this anime will have a special panel. And they will showcase behind-the-scenes stuff from Bones featuring a producer from Aver and an editor from Kodansha. Anime Expo 2024 will be on 4th July in LA. We also got a teaser PV which you can check out right here!

My Thoughts

So the two things this series excels at are world-building and the unique power system. The plot of the manga is a kind of revenge story. There is this massive pit called the Abyss. Anything seen as trash be it things or people is tossed into the Abyss by the upper class. Rudo, our protagonist is blamed for his foster father’s death and tossed in. But instead of dying, he finds himself in a strange place at the bottom where monsters made of trash roam and people called “Janitors” fight them using special powers.

In my opinion, the major shortcomings of the manga are related to art. There are no backgrounds drawn usually and yet the panels feel busy because of how overdesigned the characters are. This will not be an issue in an anime format. And it is Bones so they know their art direction very well.

That is all for now!

That covers everything for now, let me know what you guys think in the comments. I do look forward to seeing what Bones cooks up with the Gachiakuta anime. It is a very fitting project for them in my opinion. With that said, I will take my leave here. See ya!
