Gintama Yoshiwara in Flames Movie Announced!

Article at a glance:

  • Gintama is back with another movie, this time adapting the iconic Yoshiwara in Flames arc.
  • The arc is getting modern animation treatment, moving from its old 4:3 format to widescreen.
  • Set to hit Japanese theatres in 2026, the film will be directed by Naoya Andou with Bandai Namco Pictures handling the animation.

Well, this certainly is an unexpected announcement. Gintama getting even more content was not on my BINGO card, but I definitely won’t complain about it. Especially since we are talking about one of the most memorable arcs of the series. The Yoshiwara in Flames arc was the 2nd “serious” arc of Gintama after the Benizakura arc, if I recall correctly, and it’s only fitting that this gets a movie as well. Cause you know, the Benizakura arc itself got a movie back in the day.

Also, seeing all the action with newer animations will hit different, man. So yeah, welcome back to another news article, and today we are talking about Gintama: Yoshiwara in Flames movie! So let’s get started.

What do we know about the Gintama: Yoshiwara in Flames movie?

The movie adapts the titular “Yoshiwara in Flames” arc, which lasted from Episodes 139 to 147 in the anime or chapters 210 to 229 in the manga. The movie will feature new animations, of course. Since this arc is from the OG anime, it was aired in the 4:3 ratio back in the day lol. Yeah, this arc doesn’t even have a widescreen version. So a movie with modern animations adapting this arc really is awesome. Of course, Bandai Namco Pictures is returning to animate the movie. The movie will be directed by Naoya Andou.

We don’t have a confirmed release date yet, of course, but the movie is scheduled to hit the Japanese theatres sometime in 2026. We got a teaser trailer, but there’s nothing to speak of in it. Just an announcement.

But yeah, that’s all we know about the movie for now.

My Thoughts

I kind of wish that they had brought back the old Sunrise team to make this movie. I think it is pretty clear that they had a ton of fun making this anime, which is what made the first few seasons of Gintama so special for so many fans. Nothing against the Bandai Namco Pictures seasons, by the way, I like them too. Just the OG Sunrise team was special. But yeah, I understand that it may not be possible to get them back.

As for the movie itself, I think I already made it clear just how good this arc is and why this movie adaptation would go hard. The fights were already so hype in that old, 4:3 animation. Imagine how good they’d look with modern animations and, of course, a widescreen fix. This arc also introduced one of my favorite characters, Tsukuyo, so I can’t wait to see her again. You bet your sweet bippy that the OG cast is coming back to reprise their roles, and I can’t wait for this solid hit of nostalgia again.

That is all for now

So yeah, I look forward to seeing this movie in the theatres, hopefully, it releases where I live too. With that said, though, I will take my leave here. Let me know what you guys think in the comments. And yeah, I am off to play some more Elden Ring Reforged. See ya!
