Gosick, Anime Recommendation of the Week!

Key points for Anime Recommendation – Gosick:

  • Gosick explores the captivating sub-genre of gothic mysteries, making it a must-watch for those who enjoy atmospheric and suspenseful storytelling.
  • The anime focuses on the growth of its main characters, Kujou and Victorique while maintaining a balance with intriguing minor characters that contribute to the overall mystery-solving narrative.
  • Produced by Bones studio during its peak era, Gosick boasts stunning animation that holds up even today, accompanied by a fitting soundtrack, creating an immersive viewing experience.

I have proclaimed my love for good animes set in a gothic European setting time and time again. But before Undead Girl Murder Farce, Moriarty the Patriot and The Case Study of Vanitas made me realize this love, I think Gosick and Black Butler were the animes that awakened it. I first watched this anime back when I was relatively new to anime, some 7-8 years ago. And upon a recent rewatch, I now have a much better understanding of why this anime worked.

Side note, putting that time frame into words made me realize how old I am now. I will… be back… in a moment…

So where were we? Ah yes, welcome back to another edition of our anime recommendation series, This week we are talking about Gosick. If you like the sub-genre of gothic mysteries like me, then you are in for a treat. Let’s get started.

Also hey, check out the Blu-ray for this anime on Amazon here!

Introduction

Gosick is based on the LN of the same name by Sakuraba Kazuki and illustrated by Takeda Hinata. The LN is 9 volumes long and ended shortly after the anime finished airing in July 2011. I am not sure how different the LN and the anime are though since I have never read the LN. As for the anime though, it is made by Bones studio and it is 24 episodes long. It originally aired from January 2011 to July 2011.

Plot

The plot follows a Japanese transfer student, Kujou to a prestigious European school. His dark eyes and hair being foreign to the other students in the school, he is shunned and nicknamed “black reaper” after the Urban Legend of the same name. One day while exploring the library of the school, he comes across a doll-like grill, Victorique. Kujou and Vitorique eventually become friends as the plot follows them solving various mysteries using their skills.

The plot is mostly about solving disjointed mysteries, But there is an overarching mystery present throughout the anime. And it is explored in the last arc. And some cases before that help build towards that mystery as well. Of course, I am speaking in vague terms because I want to avoid spoilers. The less you know about a mystery anime, the more you will enjoy it. I will compliment this anime for the atmosphere though. Each case feels important in its own right and the show does a great job of maintaining suspense and tension till the very end of the arc.

Characters

There are only a few major characters in this anime. Aside from Kujou and Victorique, I can’t really tell you about the other major characters without spoiling anything. But still, I do find Cordella to be an interesting character. Of course, Vitorique and Kujou get the most character development throughout the series. Aside from their personal growth, their relationship growth is also handled well. Most of the other minor characters though are just there to support the various mysteries.

Animations and Soundtracks

This anime is from like the peak era of Bones. The art style is recognizable even today. Even now, the animations look amazing and they hold up well. As for the soundtracks, I don’t remember anything standing out to me but neither were they distracting. They were decent.

Summing Up

Here’s why you should watch Gosick:

  • Great setting
  • Awesome plot
  • Lots of twists
  • Charming main duo
  • Good antagonist

That is all for now. Let me know what you guys think in the comments. I will take my leave here. I am working on a special review right now. So please stay tuned for that! With that said, see ya!!
