Haikyu! Anime Recommendation of the Week!

Article at a glance:

  • Dive into the rich tapestry of characters, not just within Karasuno but across rival teams, each with their own compelling arcs and personalities.
  • Experience the adrenaline rush of exhilarating volleyball matches intertwined with seamless pacing that keeps you hooked from start to finish.
  • From the motivational opening themes to the evolving animation quality, Haikyu delivers an audiovisual feast that complements its gripping narrative and character-driven storylines.

Kinda surprised that I haven’t done an anime recommendation article on this anime yet. I am not super into sports anime but I have watched most of the “good” stuff and I like the genre in general. And I feel confident in saying that Haikyu is one of the best representations of what this genre of anime is all about. Hype, games, and characters. Much like professional wrestling, sports anime use matches to tell stories and develop characters, and certain stories can only be told through match wins and losses.

So yeah, welcome back to another edition of our anime recommendation series! This week we are talking about Haikyu! I hope I can make you see why I and so many others love this anime so dearly today. So let’s get started.

Introduction

Haikyu or Haikyuu is based on the manga of the same name by Furudate Haruichi. It was serialized in the weekly Shounen Jump magazine from February 2012 to July 2020. As for the anime, if I recall correctly, most of the seasons are made by Production IG. The first season of the anime came out all the way back in 2014. And the first part of the final movie hit the screens this year in February. The 2nd part should be coming out soon as well. The watch order may seem intimidating, but it is quite simple: Season 1-3 -> Land vs. Air OVA -> To The Top Part 1-2 -> Final movies.

Plot

Well, not much to say here as you might expect. It is about a short guy, Hinata who wants to follow in the footsteps of his idol volleyball player and make it to nationals, despite his short height. So he joins Karusuno High School, the same high school as his idol. But this high school once famous for its volleyball team has since fallen from grace. So Hinata must learn to work together with his new team while improving himself to achieve his dream. And that sums up the plot of the whole series.

While this anime is mostly defined by its characters, I think it is undeniable just how well it is paced. All good sports animes will know how to keep your attention and pull you into binging them. This anime is no different. It is among the first anime I binged non-stop.

Characters

This anime has some iconic characters. And what’s crazy is how much detail it puts into the characters of other prominent teams as well. The Karasuno team is, of course, the main focus and each member of the team gets their own arc and character development, we get a lot of development for other teams as well. The multiple spin-offs we get focusing on the game of the other teams help, sure. But even without them, the other teams are still compelling characters.

Look at how many memorable characters we have outside of Karasuno: Oikawa, Kenma, Bokuto, Kuroo, and many more. And the brilliant voice work for all of them also helps in making their eccentric personalities stand out.

Animations and Soundtracks

Man, the opening themes of Haikyu are iconic. Especially the first one. If you know the lyrics to that theme, it is one of the most motivational pieces you will ever hear. The animations are fine, this anime is among some of the better work Project IG has done and you also see improvements in animation quality over time. It has been 10 years since Season 1 aired after all.

Summing Up

Why should you watch Haikyu?

  • Awesome characters
  • Amazing matches
  • Incredibly paced
  • Binge-worthy

That is all for now! Let me know what you guys think in the comments, I will take my leave here. I am off to play some more New Vegas. See ya!
