Hellsing Ultimate, Anime Recommendation of the Week!

Does the idea of a gun-slinging immortal vampire voiced by one of the best VAs, Nakata Jouji fighting Nazis and the Church sound fun? Well, if that is something you consider interesting and you are in the mood for some crazy over-the-top action, you can’t really ask for something better than Hellsing Ultimate. Yeah, the anime is just as ridiculous as you might think. You can set your brain aside and enjoy the action. But you won’t be let down if you are looking for depth. Of course, it is not the deepest stuff ever but it’s still there.

So welcome back to another edition of our anime recommendation series. This week we are talking about Hellsing Ultimate. Let’s get started.

Introduction

Hellsing Ultimate is based on Hirano Kouta’s Hellsing. The manga ran from April 1997 to September 2008 in the Young King OURs magazine. As for the anime, Ultimate is the 2nd anime adaptation of the manga, Like how FMA and FMA Brotherhood are. Ultimate is just the superior version of the anime, it is better in every single aspect than the original adaptation. The anime is just 10 episodes long but each episode is about 50 minutes to 1 hour long.

Plot

I wasn’t kidding in the introduction, by the way. That’s actually true. The main antagonist of the story is a major from the Nazi army who survived through World War 2. The plot follows Integra and her organization Hellsing. Hellsing’s goal is to remove all supernatural threats from existence and they have a huge army at their disposal to do so. However. even that army cannot match the might of their ultimate weapon, Alucard, the legendary vampire who has lived for god knows how long.

Even though they deal with supernatural threats, the Church still doesn’t like Alucard because he’s a vampire. The plot focuses on the different weird cases Hellsing deals with and their run-ins with the Church. Meanwhile, the Nazi threat is slowly built up to till the grand finale. For how short the anime is, the world-building is amazing and the plot pacing is perfect.

Characters

The characters in this have these just crazy backstories and then you have Seras who just got dragged into all this lol. Seras probably has the most dramatic character development throughout the series. She’s also the “newbie” the audience can get behind as we learn more about the world. Alucard and Integra’s dynamic is really interesting and it only gets better as we learn more about their respective pasts. The Major is an incredible antagonist as well. Aside from these guys, we have an awesome supporting cast as well with characters like Anderson, Bernadotte, etc.

Animations and Soundtracks

Hirano Kouta has a very unique art style. The anime does a great job of preserving that art style while delivering some incredible action with smooth animations. I swear this anime has so many iconic and screenshot-worthy shots. The direction is just amazing. The soundtracks are pretty good as well.
