Hokkaido Gals, Anime Recommendation of the Week!

Key points for Anime Recommendation – Hokkaido Gals are Super Adorable:

  • The anime boasts a strong cast with well-developed characters like Shiki, Fuyuki, and Akino, whose interactions provide comedic and endearing moments throughout the series.
  • Set in Hokkaido, the anime utilizes its unique location to shape the protagonist’s character arc while adding a refreshing backdrop to the slice-of-life narrative.
  • Despite its occasional heavy fan service, “Hokkaido Gals are Super Adorable” delivers on entertainment value with its fun plot, excellent voice acting, and enjoyable character dynamics, making it a worthwhile watch for fans of the genre.

I did not watch this anime during the season because I was busy with other stuff. There is only so much I can keep up with every week, you know? But now that I had some free time this week, I binge-watched this anime and I have to say, I was not disappointed. Hokkaido Gals are Super Adorable might not hold up against stuff like A Sign of Affection or Dangers in My Heart Season 2 but still, that anime is fun enough in its own right.

So welcome back to another edition of our anime recommendation series! This week we are talking about Hokkaido Gals are Super Adorable. Despite the cheesy name, the anime is fairly entertaining. And it has quite a few good characters to keep you invested. So, let’s get started right away

Introduction

Hokkaido Gals are Super Adorable is based on the manga of the same name by Ikada Kai. The manga has been serialized on Shonen Jump+ since September 2019 and is still ongoing. As for the anime, it is made by Silver Link. It currently only has 1 season of 12 episodes that just finished airing this week. One of the last Winter 2024 anime I decided to check out.

Plot

It is a simple straightforward slice-of-life plot. A high-school student from Tokyo, Shiki Tsubasa moves to Hokkaido because of family reasons. It doesn’t take long for him to realize that Hokkaido is not as ideal as he thought and it is way colder than he anticipated. The story is pretty much about him getting used to his new lifestyle and getting used to the quirks of the locals and the friends he makes at school.

It is a typical slice-of-life plot. It does its job and I appreciate how the setting itself gives us a rough character arc for Shiki. Like all romance/slice-of-life anime, the strength of this anime also lies in the characters and not the plot itself. Still, the plot does its job well.

Characters

First of all, the voice work for all characters in this anime is fantastic. Good voice work can bring a lot of nuance to the characters and this show does a good job of using the voice talent it has to its advantage. Now aside from that, I initially thought that Shiki would be another bland character as a lot of romance MCs tend to be. But no, as I mentioned, the plot itself gives us a rough character arc for him and the series does follow it and I appreciate that.

But the real draws here are Fuyuki and Akino. Their interactions with Shiki and between themselves are hilarious and fun. Both of them are endearing and you can’t help but be drawn in by them. Fuyuki speaks in a rather typical Hokkaido accent so I love how Shiki at times picks up her verbal ticks, doesn’t suit him but it is a fun bit of characterization nonetheless.

Animations and Soundtracks

Now fair warning, this anime is a little heavy on the fan service. If you don’t like fan service in anime, you probably won’t like this anime. That said, I don’t think that the fan service aspects of the show take anything away from it, oddly enough. That said, the animations are decent. You’ll mostly be seeing white because of the setting, but I still do feel that the art style is a tad too bright for my taste. It is not bad just a little too bright. As for the soundtracks, nothing really stood out to me but the opening theme is food.

Summing Up

Here’s why you should watch Hokkaido Gals are Super Adorable:

  • Awesome characters
  • Cool setting (literally)
  • Great character interactions
  • Entertaining

That is all for now, let me know what you guys think in the comments. I will take my leave here. See ya!
