How the Bleach TYBW Anime Salvaged the Character of Yhwach

I am well aware that I might have to amend this article soon, depending on how much the rest of Part 3 and Part 4 expand on Yhwach’s character. But I still wanted to talk about it. In my opinion, TYBW Episode 28, Kill the King is one of the best episodes of the Bleach anime, and it did so much for both Ichigo and Yhwach. I won’t talk about Ichigo today. I want to focus on how much better Yhwach comes off as a character in the anime, just through subtle changes so far.

So yeah, welcome to another article. Again, this article is pretty much just going to be me rambling about why the anime adaptation of TYBW is so damn good, And today, I want to talk about Yhwach, the “final boss” of Bleach. Let’s get started.

Yhwach vs. Ichigo Pt. 2 was damn amazing.

How is the Bleach TYBW anime adaptation helping Yhwach as a character?

So I’m gonna be honest here, in the manga, Yhwach’s character was kind of paper-thin. We didn’t even know what his goals and motivations were. See, one of the reasons why Aizen was such a great villain was that he had clear goals and a motivation behind those goals. And we saw him work towards that goal nonstop. Yhwach didn’t get this in the manga. In the anime adaptation, though, things are very different. Not only does he clearly state his goal in TYBW Episode 28, but we are already getting teases for what his motivations are.

Yhwach in the anime is a man of contradictions. He claims to feel the pain of all Quincies and yet has no qualms about killing his subordinates when he no longer needs them/when they make a mistake. He aims to kill the Soul King because Quincies had no place in the Three Worlds he created, and yet he somewhat loves him as his father all the same. And I like that. Yhwach feels betrayed that the Three Worlds and the Cycle of Life, his father, Adnyeus, the Soul King, created, have no place for the Quincies.

Yhwach killing the SK — This moment feels so much more important in the anime.

So he wants to destroy the Three Worlds and merge them all back into one as they were in the Primordial Age. Here, Quincies would be the only ones capable of killing Hollows. Just with a few minor changes, his character is so much more compelling now. He even feels somewhat sympathetic, but remember, despite his seemingly sympathetic goals, Yhwach is a madman. As we have seen, he does not care about his subordinates. This will only become clearer as we approach the end of this arc.

Also, his voice acting is so damn good.

So yeah, Yhwach, who was once one of the weakest villains of Bleach in terms of writing, is now an actually compelling character. I cannot wait to see what they do with his character going forward.
