I had no idea that this manga was still ongoing. Hyouka has an amazing anime adaptation by Kyoto Animation. I am sure most of us have already watched it given how successful it was and still is. So it never even crossed my mind to look up the manga.

And to my surprise, the manga is still ongoing and of course, there is quite a bit of content beyond what the anime covered. As someone who really misses the anime, I was so happy to all the new content in the manga lol.

Anyhow, welcome back to another edition of our manga recommendation series. This week we are talking about Hyouka. Let’s get started.

Introduction

Hyouka is written by Yonezawa Honobo and illustrated by Ohna Task. It has been serialized in the Shounen Ace magazine since January 2012. And yes, it is still ongoing. There is an anime adaptation for the series too by the legendary Kyoto Animation, It is 24 episodes long and it’s fun. So you can check that out as well.

Plot

Hyouka takes place in a seemingly normal school but there is always something mysterious going on. Which at times seems unusual or even supernatural on the surface but actually has an explanation behind it. Our MC Oreki Houtaro doesn’t want to bother with things like that but unfortunately for him, his club-mate Chitanda Eru is a curious individual. And likes to make Oreki work to solve those mysteries for her LOL.

Discussion] Hyouka Manga : r/hyouka

It is a simple, cute, and wholesome SOL setup. But this simple setup is made even more entertaining by the complex nature of the mysteries they talk about on the show. It is cool to see how Oreki arrives at the conclusion for any given mystery. The mysteries are pretty varied too from something as simple as a door accidentally locking to even a potential ghost mystery of sorts. All this with the great character interactions make this anime really fun.

Characters

As I mentioned, the character interactions are a nig strength of Hyouka. Our 4 main characters bounce off of each other well and they complement each other’s personalities really well too. They’re all well-written with some character development for each of them. The side cast is really good too with some memorable and quirky characters. The side cast really shines in the School Festival arc cause other than that, it is mostly the 4 main characters spending their time together.

Art

Hyouka has some good art as well. The art style is very fitting for the series, it looks really cute and the character designs are pretty well done too. While the story mostly takes place in the school, places like Chitanda’s house really stand out because of how well they’re drawn. So yeah, great art all around.
