I am Not Sure How to Feel About the Sekiro Anime

Article at a glance:
- Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is officially getting an anime adaptation, set to release in 2026 as a Crunchyroll exclusive.
- The anime will adapt the game’s story, with the original Japanese voice cast returning, but it’s being made by a relatively unknown studio, Qzil.la.
- While the idea is exciting, fans are split—can an anime really capture the thrill of Sekiro’s combat and storytelling style?

It is no secret that I am a huge fan of FromSoft. I don’t get a chance to talk about games here often, but when I do, I have to glaze FromSoft. And as such, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is one of my favorite games of all time. I don’t think there is a single game out there with combat more satisfying than Sekiro. Over time, the sound effects of clashing swords and perfect deflects become addictive. And there isn’t a single other game out there that can beat that satisfaction. And now you’re telling me that Sekiro is getting an anime??
I have no idea how in the hell they are going to showcase the sheer thrill of the gameplay in an anime format. But at the same time, I am aware that now everyone has the patience to learn the game, and Sekiro very much offers a story worth telling. Yeah, I am very torn on this. Welcome to another news article, and today we are talking about the upcoming Sekiro anime.

What do we know about the Sekiro Anime?
Well, for starters, the anime will be adapting the game’s story. I assume they will go for the “cleansing” ending, as that is the canon ending to the game. I wish we could’ve gotten a prequel focusing on Isshin’s exploits in his younger days, but oh well. The anime will be made by a studio called “Qzil.la” and they don’t have a single major project under their belt yet. The anime will be directed by Kenichi Kutsuna. I know that the studio doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence, but the original Japanese voice cast of the game will be reprising their roles, so that’s nice.
The anime is scheduled to air some time in 2026, and it is a Crunchyroll exclusive. You can check out the first trailer for the anime here.
That covers all the news. Let’s move on to
My Thoughts
Ghost of Tsushima also had an anime adaptation announced recently, and you’ll notice that I wasn’t nearly as sceptical about that one. That’s because GoT is very much a story-driven game. While Sekiro does have a really good story, like most FromSoft games, part of the storytelling is you, the player, piecing the narrative together. And that style isn’t very suited for visual media like anime or movies. It takes away the thrill of stumbling onto the secrets of the world yourself.
Combine that with missing the thrill of the gameplay, and you’re taking away two of Sekiro’s biggest USPs. Yeah, I know that the world and story are compelling enough to make a good anime, and if the studio is good, they can make the fights look really cool as well. But I can’t help but wonder if the anime will even measure up to the game. And yet, I do see the merit in promoting the game to a whole bunch of new audiences. So yeah, my opinions on this anime remain divided. I could argue both sides the whole day…
That is all for now
But yeah, that’s all I have to say for now. Let me know what you guys think about Sekiro in the comments. I will take my leave here. I am off to play some ZZZ. Man I had a terrible day at work, and I need a break. See ya!
