I Was Wrong About Pseudo Harem

Article at a glance:

  • Despite the title, “Pseudo Harem” is a wholesome romance anime where the female MC, Rin, plays various characters to interact with the male MC, Eiji.
  • The interactions between Rin and Eiji are engaging and unpredictable, with Saori Hayami’s diverse voice acting adding depth to Rin’s characters.
  • Studio Nomad impresses with expressive animations and charming character designs, though the pacing could be improved.

These days I tend to stay away from Harem animes as I prefer romance as a genre. I don’t mind Harem animes, but many of them are quite generic. So when I read the title of this anime, it drew me away a little. But Pseudo Harem is actually a quite wholesome and cute romance anime instead of a Harem. Yes, you heard that right. Now, I have my issues with it but I must admit, episode 1 was a lot of fun and I hope the anime can keep this up.

I wasn’t expecting this anime to be what it is and this episode was way better than it had any right to be. So welcome back to another first impressions article. I am quite sure tomorrow will be filled with these too but hey, a new season is here so that’s what you get. But today we are talking about Pseudo Harem or Giji Harem. Let’s get started.

What did I think of Pseudo Harem Episode 1?

So the “harem” part of the title isn’t true at all. The female MC, Rin plays these different “characters” as a way to interact with the male MC, Eiji. The characters she plays are very typical anime stereotypes but it is really fun to see the interactions between those two because you have no idea where they will go because of this. And at the same time, it is pretty clear that Rin herself has feelings for Eiji. Also, Rin is voiced by the amazing Saori Hayami, Her voice acting range is on full display here through Rin’s various characters.

Now, my main issue is why Rin developed feelings for Eiji so suddenly. I am sure this will be answered in future episodes. But for now, it feels a little too quick. It should’ve been a little more gradual. That’s not the end of the world though because the show is still quite entertaining. And once again, I have to compliment the show for giving Eiji an actual personality. He is quite quirky and I like him.

This anime is being made by a studio called Nomad. I have not watched a single other anime from that studio. This is the first time I have heard that name. But they’re doing a great job with the animations in this show. The art style is nice and the characters are expressive. This expressiveness adds a lot of charm to Rin’s various characters. Again, I really hope that they are able to maintain this quality throughout the season.

That is all for now!

Other than that, my only issues with the anime are pacing-related so far. We will see how things pan out throughout the season. I’d give Psuedo Harem an easy 7.5/10. It had some issues but it was a really fun episode and for now, I can easily recommend it. With that said, I will take my leave here. See ya!
