Key points for Put This on Your Radar – Lazarus:
- Lazarus brings together the talents of Shuichiro Watanabe, known for Cowboy Bebop, and Chad Stahelski, director of the John Wick series, creating a unique blend of anime and action expertise.
- Despite recent controversies, Mappa is handling the animation for Lazarus. The studio’s performance will be closely watched, given their history and the anticipation surrounding this project.
- The plot revolves around a cure-all drug with a twist – those who took it will soon face death. Dr. Skinner’s disappearance and the task force’s mission to create a vaccine promise a suspenseful and compelling narrative.
I have no idea how I missed this announcement. Lazarus was announced all the way back in July of 2023. That was like 6 months ago. Plot and everything else aside, there are 2 legends from completely different worlds working on this anime. One is the director of one of the most influential anime ever, Cowboy Bebop, and the other is the director of one of the best movie series of all time, John Wick. Yes, Shuichiro Watanabe and Chad Stahelski are working on this anime. What fever dream is this?
I think this a good time to talk about this anime though since it may very well release this year. It has been like 6 months since the announcement after all. So welcome back to another edition of Put This on Your Radar – the series where we talk about anime that caught our eye. And today we are talking about Lazarus.
What do we know about Lazarus?
As mentioned earlier, this is an original anime project by Shuichiro Watanabe. Chad Sthelski is credited as the action sequence designer for the series. There is no confirmed release window for the series yet, but we do know that the anime will run for 13 episodes. You’ll notice that I have not yet mentioned what studio will be making this anime. Well, that is for a good reason. Because it is a studio we all know, Mappa.
We all know that Mappa got into quite a bit of controversy for Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 a while after this announcement. So it’ll be interesting to see how they handle this.
Now, as for the plot, it looks to be pretty interesting. A guy called Dr. Skinner created a cure-all drug called Hapuna. That drug cures all diseases and is so effective that it has become ubiquitous. As soon as the drug is officially released though, Dr. Skinner disappears. He reappears 3 years later announcing that everyone who has consumed Happuna will die soon as it has a short half-life. So a task force is formed to capture him and make a vaccine before everyone dies. Check out the PV for the anime here!
Look man, the plot shouldn’t even matter for an anime like this. I don’t need to say anything more than “Yo, the directors of John Wick and Cowboy Bebop are working on an anime together!” to generate excitement for this anime. You don’t need a better or bigger reason than that to be pumped about this anime. But the fact that the plot looks interesting too is just another cherry on top. Now, I have spoken enough about my thoughts on Mappa in the past so I won’t comment on that.
That is all for now!
Let me know what you guys think in the comments. Lazarus looks pretty exciting and I can’t wait for it to release. With that said, I will take my leave here. See ya!!
