So picked up and finished this manga last week and this week, I suddenly see it is getting an anime adaptation. I was like, “yeah, gotta put this down in this week’s recommendation”. So this manga was not at all what I expected. I honestly didn’t have an idea why was this so highly rated but, it all clicked in place when I read it. Now, I can’t wait for the anime to drop.
You have read the title, you know this week we are talking about Hoshi no Samidare or Wakusei no Samidare; whichever way you prefer to say it. And no, I think the English name is dumb so I won’t be using it. The manga is so much better than it appears; so let’s get into it.

Hoshi no Samidare is written and illustrated by Mizukami Satoshi. It was serialized from 30th June 2005 to 30th August 2010. It is 65 chapters or 10 volumes long; which is very short. It is the 176th highest-rated manga on MAL, which is pretty surprising given how many big names occupy the top 200 in MAL. That rating is very well deserved I’d say and believe me; it is hard to understand why it is so good till you read it yourself.
Hoshi no Samidare appears as a comedy or drama manga but, while it does have those elements, they are not its main focus. The part of the plot is focused on the psychological and action elements of the series. Hoshi no Samidare looks really childish but, do not let that fool you. This manga is one of the best examples of why you should not judge a book by its cover.

Plot

Put simply, Hoshi no Samidare revolves around AmamiyaYuuhi who is one day approached by a talking lizard. The lizard tells him about how a mage is trying to destroy the earth and their only hope of saving the earth is by protecting the princess. Yuuhi is chosen as the lizard knight to protect the said princess. When Yuuhi swears loyalty to the princess after being saved by her, she tells him that she plans on destroying earth herself after saving it from the mage.
Hoshi no Samidarerevolves around Yuuhi trying to decide where his loyalties lie. But, is that it though? Of course not; I am just restraining myself to not step on any spoiler landmines because some stuff really comes out of nowhere. The ending to the story was perfectly done too.

Characters

Hoshi no Samidare has a very unique approach to character development. Sure, Yuuhi and the princess, Asahina are the lead characters but, they are not the only important character. Hoshi no Samidare gives more than a sufficient amount of time to other nights as well as the mage too. This allows for some really good character development. I like this way of focusing on everyone instead of just focusing on the lead characters all the time.

Art

Yeah, this is one region I can’t exactly defend. Art is subjective and Hoshi no Samidare’s low detailed sort of light-hearted art style may not sit well with everyone. This sort of art style however works surprisingly well with what the author is trying to do and makes for some great set pieces. If you are willing to set this minor setback aside, you’ll be treated with an awesome story.
