Manga Recommendation of the Week – Tokyo Revengers

I am quite sure I’ve already done an article on this manga but, to hell with it. A lot of shit has been going on in this manga lately and the author loves to torture us with cliffhangers every week. So well, I thought this was a good opportunity to once again talk about Tokyo Revengers. Ooh boy, the plot has gone pretty crazy in the manga haven’t they?
Well so welcome to another edition of our manga recommendation series. This week we are once again taking a look at Tokyo Revengers. We all know about this series. We have all learned the lesson of not growing the lesson of not getting too attached to a character in the series. Well, with that said, let’s start right away.
Introduction
Tokyo Revengers is written and illustrated by Ken Wakui. It started its serialization on 1st March 2017 in the Weekly Shonen Magazine. It is still ongoing and chapter 261 is the latest chapter at the time of writing. The first 2-3 arcs of the series are adapted into a 24-episode anime by Liden Films with a second season currently in production. It is a great adaptation so check it out if you’re interested.
Tokyo Revengers is a very fast-paced, twist-heavy series. It is this nature of the series that makes it very addictive. Ken Wakui also takes full advantage as he loves to leave on crazy cliffhangers. This keeps you invested in the series and it is probably the reason why Tokyo Revengers is so successful.
Plot
I can’t really go into too much detail about the plot because it is important for you to experience the plot yourself for it to have the intended impact. So well, Tokyo Revengers follows Hanagaki Takemichi who one day finds out that his ex-girlfriend died in a gang conflict. He soon finds out he has the ability to return to the past. So he works with his girlfriend’s brother to go back in the past and save his girlfriend from the gang.
I kept the introduction very bare bones. As I said, you need to experience the plot yourself for the full effect of it to hit. SoΒ please avoid spoilers for Tokyo Revengers unless you’re already caught up with it. The plot is excellently paced, there are a lot of plot twists and the plot is very engaging. A lot of crazy stuff has been going on lately and man, it really makes me wonder when will all this finally end. I don’t want it to end but IΒ sooooΒ want to see the ending.
Characters
Tokyo Revengers has a lot of characters. Almost all of them are so damn well written too. From Kisaki, to what Mikey eventually ends up becoming and Takemichi himself, there is a lot of stuff to like here. Takemichi is such a great character, I agree he gets annoying at times but he is trying his best all the time. Mikey is his complete opposite… and man, he seems so different in the later arcs of the manga. Then of course we have others like Mitsuya, Draken, Chifuyu, Baji, etc.
Art
Tokyo Revengers has some pretty crazy art. On one hand, I think that the character designs are pretty cool, but on the other, the weird things in the design are pretty apparent. Namely, the long necks but, that is about the only complaint I have about the art. The dressings and stuff fit the vibe the author was going for and the fights are really well done.
Why should you read Tokyo Revengers?
Some quick pointers on why you should check out this manga:
- Great plot
- Lots of plot twists
- Awesome fights
- Great characters
Conclusion
Well, that is it for now. Let me know what you guys think in the comments. Tokyo Revengers is an awesome series and it really deserves the praise it gets. With that said though, I will take my leave here. See ya!!
