Key points Anime Recommendation – Mob Psycho 100:
- Mob Psycho 100 distinguishes itself from One Punch Man with its emotional depth, making viewers laugh and cry. The series explores complex themes, delivering moments that tug at the heartstrings.
- ONE, the creator of One Punch Man, showcases his versatility by crafting both comedic and emotionally profound narratives. The contrast between the two series highlights ONE’s storytelling range and ability to engage audiences in different ways.
- The series revolves around Mob’s character growth, utilizing a diverse cast of side characters to contribute to his development. Noteworthy characters like Reigen undergo surprising evolution, adding depth and complexity to the overall narrative.
Sometimes it is kind of hard to believe that this series is written by the same author as One Punch Man. You know, given how funny and comical OPM is. While Mob Psycho 100 is the complete opposite. Yes, it has its funny moments. But the series in general, is very deep emotionally. This series will make you cry on multiple occasions and the character complexity presented is just amazing.
So yes, welcome back to another edition of our anime recommendation series! This week we will be taking a look at Mob Psycho 100! I love this series from the bottom of my heart so let’s just get right into it!
Mob Psycho 100 is based on the manga of the same name by ONE. As I mentioned, ONE has also written and is currently working on, One Punch Man. As for the anime, the anime currently has 3 seasons. All 3 seasons are around 12-13 episodes are made by Bones. The latest season, season 3 came out in the fall season of 2022. So little over a year ago. By the way, there were a few years during which ONE was working on both this and OPM. Pretty crazy to think about.
The plot is centered on Shigeo Kageyama, or he is called, Mob. Mob has psychic powers but he chooses to suppress them because he doesn’t know how to control them well. As such, he also works under Arataka Reigen, who claims to be a psychic himself but is a con artist. Mob helps Reigen by exorcising spirits, That is not all though. Mob is kind of a ticking time bomb. If his abilities and emotions lose control, there will be a disaster. And yes, it does happen a few times throughout the series.
I cannot do justice to the plot of all 3 seasons in this small space, of course. But trust me when I tell you, the plot is pretty good. And that is not even the main focus of the series. The plot is merely a medium to explore and develop Mob’s character (hence, the name of the series. The fights are few and far between but whenever there is a fight, the anime will drag you into the moment. Every fight in this anime signifies something emotional or close to Mob. Hence his character grows every time after a fight. The ending of Season 2 is probably the biggest example of this.
I think I have talked about Mob enough. The whole plot is based on his character. after all. So I would like to mention the awesome cast of side characters this anime has. Reigen, of course, comes up first. He is using Mob for his profit and he is rather hateable but the Season 2 ending changed even that. His character is so well-written. Then we have Ritsu, Teruki, Musshashi, the anime is just full of fun and interesting characters. And best of all, most of them contribute to Mob’s character development. It is incredible.
Animations and Soundtracks
Bones nailed the art style on this. They did not pull back on the production either. They took ONE’s quirky art style and transitioned it perfectly into the anime. All 3 opening and ending themes of the show are great too.
That is all for now!
Here’s why you should watch Mob Psycho 100:
- Amazing plot
- Great character work
- Awesome fights
- Great animations
