Monogatari Series: Off-Season/Monster Season Anime Announced!

Key points for Monogatari Series news:

  • The Monogatari Series is set to return with adaptations of the Off-Season and Monster Season LN volumes. The Off-Season covers 4 volumes, while the Monster Season covers 6, promising a continuation of the unique and deep storytelling the series is known for.
  • Shaft will once again handle the animation, and Akiyuki Shinobu, known for their previous work on the series, will direct. Production for both anime series is set to begin this year, with uncertainty about whether both will be released in the same year.

The Monogatari Series was long overdue for a return in an anime form. Nishio Isshin has been constantly pumping out LNs over the years and they’re still really good. There was a point where it felt like the series would end, but nah it’s still going strong. And here we are, finally the newer LN volumes will be adapted into an anime and I am very excited. If you are new to the series, I will have a guide coming out for watch orders and things like that soon. This anime can get quite confusing.

But, today we are here to talk about the announcement of Monogatari Series: Off-Season and Monster Season animes. So let’s start already because there is quite a bit to cover.

What do we know about Monogatari Series: Off-Season & Monster Season animes?

The LN volumes of this series come out in “seasons”. So for example, the Off-Season covers 4 volumes: Orokamonogatari, Wazamonogatari, Nademonogatari, and Musubimonogatari. The Monster Season, on the other hand, covers 6 volumes: Shinobumonogatari, Yoimonogatari, Amarimonogatari, Ougimonogatari, and the two-parter Shimonogatari, Of course, it wouldn’t be the Monogatari series unless things are released a little out of chronological order. So, the first 2 arcs (volumes) of the Off-Season are not chronologically sequenced.

Well, the deep story stuff aside, I will talk about all that in more detail in my next article. The anime will be made by Shaft once again. And it will be directed by Akiyuki Shinobu, they have also worked on the series before this. So this combo is perfect. We know that the production of both animes is starting this year. But we are not sure if both of them will be released this year or not. Other than that, we don’t have any more information as of now. But I will keep you updated.

My Thoughts

If it wasn’t already clear, I am a huge fan of the series. I love how obscure, weird, and yet deep this series can be. I love how all the supernatural occurrences in the series are used as a plot device for the exploration and development of the character focused on in the volume/arc. If you know a bit of Japanese, you’d know the meaning of all the different arcs (“monogataris”) we’ve seen so far and how clever the titles are. I don’t know how Nishio Isshin keeps finding more words to fit into this naming convention of his. Either way, I am very excited about this.

I feel like we will see the Off-Season anime this year and then Monster Season early next year. The odds of both seasons coming out this year feel a little low to me. But, that’s just my thinking.

That is all for now!

Let me know what you guys think in the comments. I will take my leave here. Can’t wait to see more of the Monogatari Serie weirdness. See ya!!
