And we finally have more details on it.

I somehow missed the initial announcement of the movie. I actually watched the original anime a while ago because the art style caught my eye. Regardless, here we are now that the movie has some more details to share.

So welcome back to another edition of Put This on Your Radar – the series where I talk about upcoming anime that caught my eye. Today we are talking about Mononoke, the Movie version.

What do we know about Mononoke Movie?

As I said, Mononoke was an original anime by Toei Animation that came out in 2007 and was 12 episodes long. They announced this movie for the 15th anniversary of the series and the movie will likely be a reboot of the original series. The movie has made some changes to the original staff and cast, of course. The movie will be made by Twin Engine Studios, The director of the original series, Nakamura Kenji is returning though. Hiroshi Kamiya will be replacing Takahiro Sakurai for the lead role of the Medicine Seller.

For those unfamiliar with the original anime, the story revolved around the mysterious Medicine Seller. He travels across Japan in search of malevolent spirits or “Mononoke”. He exorcises them but it is a process that takes time and is highly psychological. The series focuses on one particular case where he tries to save the life of a pregnant lady from the Zashiki Warashi. The movie is scheduled to come out in Summer 2024. With the staff announcement, we also got a new trailer that you can check out here.

That is all the news for now, let’s move on to

What do I think?

This anime caught my eye because it was weird and unique. The art style immediately catches your eyes because of how abstract it looks but the story of the anime fits that art style as well. It is very weird and unique. that is what makes it fun to watch. I was concerned about the change of studios for the movie but it is fine since the original director is returning.

Also, Hiroshi Kamiya sounds really good in the role of the Medicine Seller. No hate to Takahiro Sakurai, I just think that Kamiya’s voice fits better with the tone of the anime.

That is all for now. I am pretty excited about the Mononoke Movie, especially since I know how wild the original anime was. Should be fun to see it with the updated visuals of the movie. Let me know what you guys think in the comments. And I will take my leave here. See ya!!
