- The series boasts an amazing plot, captivating character writing, and fitting Victorian England art style and soundtracks, making it a must-watch for fans of detective and suspense anime.
I watched this anime back when it came out on a friend’s recommendation. And man, I loved it. I have a thing for good suspense stories and this delivered. Moriarty the Patriot is a different spin on the classic Sherlock Holmes stories. And this anime manages to deliver a very compelling story without disrespecting the original classics from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
So if you are looking for a good detective anime, you are at the right place. This anime has everything, the vibe, the story, the atmosphere, and great character writing to back it all up.
So welcome back to another edition of our anime recommendation series! This week we are talking about Moriarty the Patriot. So let’s get started.
Introduction
Moriarty the Patriot is based on the manga of the same name by Takeuchi Ryousuke and Miyoshi Hikaru. The manga has been serialized in Jump SQ magazine since August 2016. As for the anime, it is made by Production IG. It has 2 seasons and a total of 24 episodes. No third season has been announced yet even though the manga is still ongoing. The seasons came out in Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 respectively.
Plot
Unlike a traditional Sherlock Holmes story, this anime shows us the perspective of James Moriarty. And unlike the original series, the anime version of Moriarty is not evil, he just uses evil as a means of doing good. His crimes ultimately end up being for the benefit of London but they are crimes nonetheless. This piques the interest of one detective we all know and love, Sherlock Holmes. And you know how it goes, a battle of wits and who outsmarts the other.
So as I was saying earlier, this is a very fresh take on the Sherlock Holmes stories. It manages to be compelling in its own right without disrespecting the original works. The plot is paced incredibly well and the story knows how to get you on your feet. My only gripe is the ending of season 2 but that is not enough to make me dislike this series.
Characters
Moriarty the Patriot has some amazing character work. All the Moriarty siblings have distinct characters and different roles to play. The way James convinces people to join him is incredibly well done. The charisma of his character is undeniable and then there is, of course, Sherlock Holmes himself. Just as quirky and smart as you’d expect him to be. They even managed to feature Mycroft in a rather important role.
Animations and Soundtracks
The art style is awesome. I have a thing for Victorian England to naturally, I love the vibe of this anime. The animations are alright, standard Production IG stuff, nothing out of the ordinary. The soundtracks are pretty dope though. They capture the feeling of the period well. And I love both the opening themes of this anime.
Why should you watch Moriarty the Patriot?
Quick pointers on why you should watch this anime:
- Amazing plot
- Great characters
- A great twist on a recognizable story
