Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Part 2 Review: Depressing

Man, this season of Mushoku Tensei was heavy. I know that Mushoku Tensei has always been pretty depressing but Season 2 Part 2 took it to new heights, which is why the title of this review is what it is. Even though the season starts somewhat light-hearted with Rudy and Sylphy’s marriage, the second half of the season is heavy. Aside from the amazing world-building, Mushoku Tensei is a character-driven story. And this season showcased that really well.

So given that I can’t really properly talk about my feelings on this anime without mentioning the last few episodes and Norn’s arc, there will be spoilers ahead. So proceed with caution. With that said, welcome back to another review and today we are talking about Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Part 2 or Cour 2. Let’s get started.

Plot

The plot only really picks up in the latter half of the season. But the latter half would not his as hard as it does if it wasn’t for the former half. What do I mean? Let me explain. By setting up and showing us so much of Rudy and Sylphy’s daily life before and after their marriage, the show sets up the stakes. We know how happy Rudy was during those “usual” days. And we also know that these days won’t last long and that’s exactly what happens.

Now I do wish the Roxy got a little more time like she had in the LN. Episode 11 felt a little rushed despite being a pretty good episode overall. Nanahoshi’s dedicated episode was amazing, it showed something that most isekai shows run away from or completely ignore, the strong desire to return to her old life. Norn’s arc was amazing as well. And as for the last arc… don’t even get me started on it. They delayed the episode deliberately to make episode 10 land right on Father’s Day. The episode was titled “Parents” and if you have watched that episode, you know how good it was. But yeah, aside from minor pacing issues, the plot was great.

Characters

I have said multiple times that Mushoku Tensei is a character-driven story and this season makes it very clear. Aside from Rudy’s obvious character development into being a somewhat responsible adult, we got a lot of character development for other characters too. Nanahosi and Norn had their own episode both of their focus episodes were amazing. We get to see how badly Zenith’s absence is affecting Paul, we see Slyphy transitioning slowly into the role of a wife and now mother.

There are so many great character moments in this season. Even Rudy himself gets quite a few of them. And I love the fact that he takes advice from all of his peers when he isn’t sure about something. And then what happens to him in the last few episodes is just heartbreaking.

Animations and Soundtracks

Studio Bind did a fantastic job with the production once again. The locations in Mushoku Tensei are very distinct and memorable and this season is no different. The soundtracks were pretty solid as well. We had a really cute opening and ending theme for this season. So yeah, nothing much to say here other than Studio Bing did a good job as always.
