Mushoku Tensei Season 3 Part 1 Review: Worth the Wait?

Mushoku Tensei Season 3 Part 1 Review

Mushoku Tensei Season 3 Part 1, all things considered, was a pretty damn good season. And yes, I say Part 1 because Part 2 is already confirmed following the release of Part 1 Episode 14. Everything this season did, from Eris’s reintroduction to Turning Point 4, was brilliant. This season probably has the most world-building since Season 1. I know people have their reservations about Mushoku Tensei because of Rudeus, rightfully so. But this season does a great job of showing why this anime can be great. And so yeah, welcome to my Mushoku Tensei Season 3 Part 1 review!

At a glance:

  • The most world-building since Season 1. Perugius alone opens up a huge chunk of this world, and you can feel the show setting up something massive with him.
  • Turning Point 4 is the whole season. The last three episodes are some of the best Mushoku Tensei has ever done. Episode 13 is a rough watch, and it’s meant to be.
  • Studio Bind doesn’t miss. Animation, art, soundtrack, all of it. Sugita’s performance in Episode 12 is worth the season on its own.

Of course, there will be some major spoilers ahead. And trust me, this season has a LOT of spoiler-worthy stuff. And we will be talking about a lot of that. With that said, though, let’s get started.

Plot

Eris’s Return

Mushoku Tensei Season 3 Part 1 Review

Let’s talk about this side first since the season opens back with Eris’s side of things. And I’ll be honest, this is probably the weakest part of the season overall. Not because it is bad, but because the rest of the season is just so much better. But I don’t mind it too much; it was quick, just a few episodes to catch us up on what Eris had been up to after leaving Rudy. And this is important because Rudy brings her back into the fold after the events of Turning Point 4. And it had some really good character moments for Eris.

So you know, while it isn’t as insane as the rest of the season, it is still a good section that serves its purpose well enough. It didn’t have any major issues and such; it was a little boring. Especially when compared to the rest of the season.

Perugius & Nanahoshi

Mushoku Tensei Season 3 Part 1 Review

Perugius is such an important addition to the plot. He is someone deeply familiar with the world and has a long history. I love how mysterious he is, and you can just tell the plot is building him up for an insane role in the future. And it is only fair that it was Nanahoshi who introduced the main cast to the Perugius. Because right after that, she begins to fall ill. And yep, sure enough, Nanahoshi’s breakdowns are always tough to watch. I don’t wanna say it, but Nanahoshi falling ill is what starts the “good part” of this season. Because after that, the tone completely changes.

The whole mini-arc after that of finding Kishirika and the fight with Atofe was also really good.

Mushoku Tensei is never really afraid to make the viewer uncomfortable, and well, that is going to play a huge part in the next arc.

The Turning Point 4 Arc

Mushoku Tensei Season 3 Part 1 Review

And this was the biggest home run of the whole season. These last 3 episodes were probably some of the best episodes in the whole series so far. The Oldeus reveal was utterly insane. It came out of nowhere, and even though Episode 12 was mostly just a long conversation, it was an amazing episode. It was engaging, and Oldeus’s story was haunting to listen to. And of course, after that, we were “blessed” with Episode 13, one of the hardest-to-watch episodes of Mushoku Tensei.

Suffice it to say, the whole Turning Point 4 mini-arc, just like the previous Turning Point episodes, has changed the course of the story forever. I am so excited to see what awaits us in Season 3 Part 2.

Characters

Mushoku Tensei Season 3 Part 1 Review

As always, Mushoku Tensei is very consistent with its characters. Rudeus, as expected, gets the most character development throughout the season. The two big character moments for him this season were losing the fight to Atofe and Moore, realizing that there are still people far stronger than him, and the other one, of course, being meeting Oldeus. You can visibly see in Episode 14 how uncomfortable reading Oldeus’s diary made Rudy. He legit starts his family better because of how afraid he was to lose them.

Also, I love Rudy’s family dynamic. Both Sylphie and Roxy are good counters to him. I love how Roxy is the mature one in their marriage. Whenever Rudy and Sylphie are at a stalemate, it is Roxy who provides a more nuanced perspective and gives a solution. I love their dynamic.

Of course, the other big, important character this season is the Man God. We finally know what Hitogami wants with Rudeus and why he’s so scared of him. He can’t interfere directly, so he chose manipulation instead. We get a hint of his true nature when he reveals that Paul would be alive had Rudy not gone to rescue Zenith, but still.

Perugius remains a big mystery, and Nanahoshi still is one of the most sympathetic characters in isekai history. Eris also got a surprising bit of character development in her arc. So yeah, once again, no major complaints overall.

Studio Bind’s Animation

Mushoku Tensei Season 3 Part 1 Review

Studio Bind once again cooked hard with the production. I’ve never really seen a Mushoku Tensei episode with janky animations. The animations are always butter-smooth, be it fights or otherwise; the art looks amazing, and the soundtrack is always on point. The openings are beautifully haunting as always, and the ending theme is also nice. Tomokazu Sugita delivers a phenomenal performance as Oldeus. People tend to forget how good a VA Sugita is because of how many comedy roles he has done. But that man has variety. Oldeus’s dialogue in Episode 12 has so much raw emotion behind it.

Mushoku Tensei Season 3 Part 1 Review Score

Here are my final review scores for Mushoku Tensei Season 3 Part 1:

  • Plot – 8/10
  • Characters – 10/10
  • Production – 9/10
  • Enjoyment – 9/10
  • Overall – 9/10

As expected, high scores all around. Because I really don’t have a major complaint about this season. This is one of the most well-rounded seasons of an anime you could ask for, and Mushoku Tensei has almost always been like this. But yeah, let me know what you guys think in the comments. I will take my leave here.
