Nanahoshi is One of the Best Characters in Mushoku Tensei

Article at a glance:

  • Nanahoshi’s desire to return to her old life adds depth to the isekai genre, diverging from the typical narrative of characters embracing their new world.
  • The portrayal of Nanahoshi’s desperation and breakdown after years of failed research resonates with readers, highlighting the emotional toll of her situation.

We get a lot of isekais, right? We get like what, 3-4 every single season? If not more. But I haven’t seen many isekais deal with the idea of a character wanting to go back to their older life. Most isekais portray that the character’s old life sucked and they have no desire to go back. But with Nanahoshi, Mushoku Tensei does something different. She was teleported to this new world unwillingly and she really wants to go back to her old life.

Last week’s episode of Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Part 2 did a great job of showcasing her desperation of wanting to go back. And that episode gave me a new appreciation for her character. So I went back and read the same part in the LN. That is why I am writing this article, to tell you some stuff that happened in the LN as well as give some more context as to why she acted the way she did in last week’s episode. Let’s get into it.

Why Nanahoshi works as a character in Mushoku Tensei?

Man, I wish more isekais tackled this theme and the desperation of someone wanting to go back to their own world. Shield Hero did this in the beginning but Naofumi soon found his place in the new world and decided to stay. While Nanhoshi has been constantly working to figure out a way to go back to her world ever since she got teleported to this one. And since she was teleported, not reborn like Rudy was, she doesn’t have access to magic either. Which makes her research even more difficult.

Still, she spends years on years researching teleportation. She finally reaches a breakthrough after two years of constant research… and, it fails. This is why she breaks down the way she does. All the time she spent in research after getting teleported 6 years ago, fell apart right in front of her. Combine that with her desperation of wanting to go back, and you can see why she would act that way. And you feel for her, like damn, I get panicked if a project I just spent the week building doesn’t work. I can only imagine how losing years of research must feel like.

What is different in the LN? Well, there are two things I’d like to point out. The anime only alludes to self-harm. But the LN is pretty upfront about it. Rudy is also a lot more panicked himself in the LN. Because Nanahoshi’s conditions are essentially the polar opposite of his. So seeing her break down, puts him on the edge too. This is why he takes her to his home to recover when he could’ve easily left her in the infirmary.

That is all for now

So yeah, I hope you see why I appreciate Nanahoshi as much as I do, I’d go as far as saying she’s currently one of the best characters in Mushoku Tensei. Let me know what you guys think in the comments. I will take my leave here. See ya!
