Key takeaways from Onimusha Anime news:
- The upcoming Onimusha anime adaptation centers around Miyamoto Musashi, a character not featured in the original games. It’s produced by Sublimation Studio, directed by Miike Takashi, and is a Netflix exclusive set to release on November 2, 2023.
- The choice of Sublimation Studio, known for its questionable track record, raises concerns among fans. The past Netflix adaptation of “Dragon’s Dogma” by the same studio has left some cautious about the quality of the Onimusha anime.
- While the anime’s trailer looks promising, some fans have reservations about the theme song, “The Loneliest” by Maneskin, feeling that it may not fit the traditional setting of the series.
So apparently somehow the initial announcement of this anime adaptation completely slipped under my nose. But don’t worry, we got this now. I always thought an Onimush anime would be cool and well, here we are. I don’t know how but here we are.
For those of you who don’t know, Onimusha is an old video game series by Capcom. The first game came out in 2001 for the PS2 and was then updated for the original Xbox in 2002. The series has 8 games but there hasn’t been a new one in a while. Pretty sure the latest game for the series was a remaster of the first game for PS4/Xbox One. The series focuses on Feudal Japan, retelling the stories of the Sengoku era with supernatural elements.
With the long introduction out of the way, let’s move on to the actual news. I will save my thoughts for later on.
What do we know about the Onimusha Anime?
First and foremost, the anime focuses on Miyamoto Musashi, who was not featured in the games. So it is a new story for sure, The anime will be made by Sublimation Studio. Unfortunately, their track record is not good. More on that later. It will be directed by Miike Takashi, who is a film director, as in an actual film director, and has not worked on animation previously. And of course, it is a Netflix exclusive.
Yep, the anime will be released worldwide on Netflix on 2nd November 2023. Akio Ootsuka will be voicing Miyamoto Musashi. The theme song for the series is “The Loneliest” by Maneskin. We recently got a new trailer for the anime too. Which you can check out right here. And I believe that covers all of the important stuff regarding the anime.
What do I think?
Boy, there is a lot to talk about here. As a fan of the Onimusha games, I am excited about the anime, obviously. But the track record of the Studio really concerns me. I am very cautious about Netflix anime as is. And I remember how bad Netflix’s Dragon’s Dogma adaptation was, which was made by this very same studio as well. So yeah, saying I am concerned would be an understatement.
Now, all that said, the trailer does look nice. And I really, really do hope that they keep up this standard for the actual anime as well. Lastly, while I do love Maneskin, I wish they had gotten a more “traditional” band for the theme. Their music is great but it doesn’t really fit the setting of the series, in my opinion.
That is all for now!
I am cautiously excited about this anime. I hope that my concerns are proved wrong in the future. Let me know what you guys think though. And I will take my leave here. See ya!!
