Roze of the Recapture Epiode 12 was Underwhelming

I know that I have already done my review for this. But Roze of the Recapture Episode 12 left me with some thoughts so I wanted to talk about it. Roze of the Recapture in general had its moments and I enjoyed it as a Code Geass fan but overall, it wasn’t that good. And Episode 12 was a great example of why I feel this way about the series. There was some good stuff in Episode 12 but it underwhelming overall. And considering that this will be the last of Code Geass we will see for a while, that makes me sad.
There will be spoilers ahead, of course. We are discussing the season finale after all. So yeah, welcome back to another article and today we are talking about Roze of the Recapture Episode 12. Let’s get started.
What do I think of Roze of the Recapture Episode 12?
Let’s start with the positives. The Roze & Ash vs. Norland fight was amazing. It was well-choreographed, and Sunrise’s animations shined through once again. And Norland dying in the same way he killed Ash’s brother all those years ago was poetic. I loved all the cameos from the original series and Akito the Exhiled during the last 3 episodes and the final episode also had plenty of those as well. The animations and production in general were also solid as always. Lastly, seeing Narah and Catherine work for the orphanage was a nice ending for them.
Now for the negatives. While Norland’s death was fine, Ash’s death along with him felt underwhelming. It had no build-up or fanfare, it just happened. It didn’t even impact the story much. Sakuya/Roze sealing her ability to use the Geass to “repent” for Ash’s death was also kind of stupid because as a ruler, that power could be so damn useful in the future and stuff. The “epilog” part in general felt quite rushed and could’ve been handled a lot better. The finale overall would be a lot better if it spanned two episodes (12 and 13) instead of just one (12).
There was no reason for Ash to die, the explanation they used for it was stupid. Norland, the main villain being a Charles clone was also a stupid twist. He was a boring villain in general and had no depth. Mao from the original anime was a better villain than Norland and Mao was only around for like 4 episodes. Not using Lelouch and C.C. in the finale despite showing them in 2-3 episodes was also a mistake. It wasn’t made clear how so many of the remaining Loki were cleared out after defeating Norland… yeah, there were a lot of issues with this finale.
