Roze of the Recapture Episode 6 was good but Problematic

Article at a glance:

  • Episode 6 resolves major cliffhanger quickly, highlighting inconsistency in pacing and tension-building.
  • Heavy-handed exposition in character dialogues, particularly in scenes between old friends, disrupts immersion.
  • Despite narrative issues, the series continues to impress with its animation, fight scenes, and music.

Roze of the Recapture… If I had to sum up my experience with the series as a whole, I’d use the exact phrase as the title: Good but Problematic. There are certain things that this anime is doing really well. I like the direction it is going in even though the plot itself is a little… questionable. And Roze of the Recapture Episode 6 is a pretty good example of what I mean. This one episode highlights both the strengths and the weaknesses of this series alike. So while I will be talking about the series as a whole, I will use episode 6 as my main example.

So welcome to the first mid-season review for the Summer 2024 season. And today we will be talking about Code Geass: Lelouch of the- Oh, wait I mean Roze of the Recapture, Episode 6 to be more particular. So let’s get started.

Also, spoiler warning.

Narah has such a cool design

What did I think of Roze of the Recapture Episode 6?

So after giving us such an awesome cliffhanger at the end of last week’s episode, nothing really came of it. I thought most of this episode would be spent dealing with the Damocles falling on top of the ghetto. But no, that massive issue was resolved in the first 5 minutes of the episode. So what was the point of building up so much tension with that cliffhanger last week? Believe me, I like the direction of the plot despite it being a rehash of the original. But small things like this irritate me.

Moving on, I love the angle they took with Narah and Ash. That was an unexpected turn of events. But then the conversation that followed was so exposition-heavy, holy shit. They didn’t even try to hide that the conversation was meant to convey Ash’s backstory to the audience and Sakuya. Exposition-heavy dialog was a problem in the first few episodes too. But it was forgivable because they’re just the first few episodes and it felt a little more natural because Sakuya was talking to a stranger.

Ash though? He was talking to an old friend. He and Narah grew up in the same orphanage, that is not how old friends talk. They should already know most of the information brought up in that conversation. That one conversation ticked me off so much. And that is a damn shame because their voice actors did a fantastic job of conveying the emotions and I like their dynamic.

That is all for now

Other than that, you know what to expect. Amazing animations, awesome fights, the environments, characters, and the knightmares all look fantastic. The music is good. Sunrise doesn’t miss. But yeah, Episode 6 highlighted both my praises and issues with Roze of the Recapture. With that said though, I will take my leave here. See ya!
