Sengoku Youko, Put This on Your Radar!

Key takeaways from Put This on Your Radar – Sengoku Youko:

  • Satoshi Mizukami’s underappreciated works receive anime adaptations, with Sengoku Youko being the latest. Excitement stems from Mizukami’s storytelling and White Fox’s involvement.
  • Sengoku Youko manga portrays a war between humans and monsters, centering on siblings Tama and Jinka. Their quest to unveil a plot and protect humanity drives the plot.
  • White Fox Studios, renowned for Re: Zero and Steins Gate, takes on the Sengoku Youko adaptation. Directed by Masahiro Aizawa, the anime is anticipated for the Winter 2024 season.

I am so happy to see another one of Satoshi Mizukami’s works get an anime adaptation. His works in general are rather underappreciated. Now I personally would have liked to see an anime adaptation for Spirit Circle instead, I don’t mind seeing Mizukami’s older works like Sengoku Youko get an anime either.

The other work of his that got an anime was Hoshi no Samidare. Admittedly, that was a really bad adaptation. This one looks much more promising than that it has a pretty good studio backing it up too so hopefully it ends well.

Anyhow, welcome back to another edition of Put This on Your Radar – the series where I talk about upcoming anime that caught my eye. And today we are talking about Sengoku Youko. Let’s get started.

What do we know about Sengoku Youko?

As I mentioned earlier, the manga is written by Satoshi Mizukami. It was serialized on Blade ONline from December 2007 to May 2016. It is 100 chapters or 17 volumes long. The manga is about a war between humans and monsters called Katawara. Despite being a Katawara, Tama alikes humans and protects them from injustice even if it means fighting her own kind. Her brother, Jinka is mostly a human but still does not like them. They uncover a plot that is turning humans into monsters and keeping the wat alive, they vow to stop it.

As for the anime, it will be made by White Fox Studios, yes, the same people behind Re: Zero, Steins Gate, etc. They had been missing for a while but they are finally back. Masahiro Aizawa will be directing the anime, he has worked on storyboards for stuff like Kaguya-sama and 86 previously. The anime is scheduled to come out in the Winter 2024 season, so sometime in January 2024. You can check out the teaser PV for the anime here!

My Thoughts

So as I said, I am really happy to see another one of Satoshi Mizukami’s works get an anime adaptation. This time, I am not even concerned about the quality of the adaptation because White Fox is an awesome studio and they’ve worked on some really iconic animes in the past. The director himself has not had any notable directorial roles in the past though, most of his notable works seem to be starboard related. Still, I am quite excited about this anime because the source material is awesome and a good studio is working on it.

Conclusion

That is all for now. Sengoku Youko should be a fun one to keep track of in 2024. Let me know what you guys think in the comments. I will take my leave here. See ya!!
