Solo Leveling Episode 1 Was…

Key points for Solo Leveling Episode 1 review:

  • Personally, I found Solo Leveling Episode 1 to be a standard opening episode, serving as an introduction to the world and its dynamics, rather than making a remarkable impact.
  • Despite the episode not standing out, I appreciated its effective world-building. It provided insight into how the emergence of monsters and magic has impacted the economy and daily life in the series.
  • I must admit that my expectations for Solo Leveling were exceptionally high due to the intense community hype. While Episode 1 didn’t blow me away, I anticipate that the series will live up to its reputation in subsequent episodes.

Solo Leveling is one of the most hyped anime of 2024. The hype for this anime has been palpable, you could literally taste it in the community. The last time I experienced a hype of this level was probably for Chainsaw Man. Solo Leveling Episode 1 just dropped and I have some thoughts on it. If you have watched the episode, you would know what I mean and again, this is not about the series as a whole. I am only talking g about the FIRST episode, NOTHING MORE. So please keep that in mind as we move forward.

I say all that because I know for a fact that episode 2 is going to be a banger. So welcome back to another first impressions articleβ€”one of the many to come from the Winter 2024 season. And today, finally, we are talking about Solo Leveling Episode 1. Let’s get started.

What do I think of Solo Leveling Episode 1?

Look man, I’ll be honest, the episode didn’t blow me away. It wasn’t a bad episode, but it didn’t stand out much. Felt like a pretty typical anime opening episode. Again, this is only about the first episode. Because given how the episode ended, I know that episode 2 is where the meat and bones of the introduction will be. So yeah, episode 1 was pretty much just an introduction to the world and how things work. We got a decent amount of information on the world and how the emergence of monsters and magic has affected the economy and all.

The world-building aspect of the episode was pretty good. The episode also did a good job of representing just how weak Sung Jin-woo, our protagonist is at this point. We got a pretty typical dungeon-crawl episode where the party wipes out the attacking monsters with relative ease while Sung still struggles despite it being a very low-rank dungeon. A nice little setup to show us how strong he is going to be in the future and the hopelessness of the last scene of the episode hits that much harder knowing all this.

So despite all the praises, why was I not impressed by the episode? Simple. It is because of how much this series matters to the community. When something is this hyped, you expect a little more from the first episode. And while this episode is fine for any other anime, Solo Leveling is NOT “any other anime”. Again, I know for a fact that come episode 2 next week, I will be forced to eat my words and I am perfectly fine with that. This is no fault of the anime itself, by the way, it is just that in my mind the expectations for this series are pretty high.

That is all for now!

I look forward to seeing the future episode because I know for a fact that this series will be a banger. Either way, let me know what you guys think of Solo Leveling Episode 1 in the comments. I will take my leave here. Again, let me reiterate, that this is only about the first episode. The 2nd episode isn’t even out yet. With that said, I will take my leave here. See ya!!
