I got curious when I saw Season 3 of Sound Euphonium getting a lot of praise. It is currently the highest-rated Spring 2024 anime on MAL. And I had not heard of the series at all till now. So I decided to check it out. And after binging Season 1 and watching a bit of Season 2, I can confidently say I was missing out on something special. There is so much good about this anime from the consistent sense of plot progressions to the charming characters, how in the hell did I miss this for so long? Well, I am here now so it is all good.

So welcome back to another edition of our anime recommendation series. This week we are talking about Sound Euphonium! So let’s get started!

Introduction

Sound Euphonium is based on a novel series by Ayano Takeda. It also has a manga adaptation illustrated by Hami and serialized in the “Kono Manga ga Sugoi” website. As for the anime, it is made by Kyoto Animation. As I mentioned, Season 3 is currently airing, and aside from the first two seasons, it also has a bunch of specials and movies. The watch order: watch the first two seasons, the 3rd movie, and then the Ensemble Contest-arc OVA. And season 3 after that, of course. Everything else is optional.

Plot

On the surface, the plot of this anime is simple. Kumiko is a euphonium player and wants a fresh start in high school. But she still somehow gets dragged into the school’s concert band club. The band soon gets a new advisor, Taki who gives them a choice: have fun or practice seriously and aim for the nationals. The majority choose the nationals and hence a strict practice routine starts under Taki.

This is a very basic plot summary of season 1. Throughout so many episodes and movies and all, the plot progresses a lot. Even though this is kind of a slice-of-life anime, every episode moves the plot forward. It feels like time moves forward in each episode and by the time you reach even Season 2, things are a lot different from Season 1. This shows just how tightly paced this anime is. That is one factor that contributes to its enjoyment the other being

Characters

Kumiko is a great protagonist in this anime with a large cast. Her cynicism and indecisiveness make her relatable. The exceptional voice performances of all the characters elevate their well-written personalities. The character interactions, especially between Kumiko, Reina, Hazuki, Midori, and Asuka, are enjoyable to watch.

Also, a special shoutout to Taki. He radiates charisma whenever he is on the screen. Be it from how he is animated to Sakurai Takahiro’s exceptional performance, Taki commands the screen whenever he is present. I wish I had music teachers like him.

Animations and Soundtracks

What do want me to say? It is Kyoto Animation and god damn, they haven’t lost a step. These are some of the most expressive characters I have seen in anime and it all comes down to how well the show is animated. And even aside from the performances, this anime has some amazing soundtracks.

Summing up

Here’s why you should watch Sound Euphonium

  • Engaging pacing
  • Well-written and charming characters
  • Kyoto Animation
  • Great soundtracks

That is all for now! Let me know what you guys think in the comments. I will take my leave here. See ya!
