Spy Kyoushitsu – Mixed Feelings…

I picked up this anime purely out of curiosity. Cause I thought I’d get a mix of Assassination Classroom and Spy x Family. Well, I did getΒ that to an extent but, it was nowhere close to what I had in mind. So is Spy Kyoushitsu straight out bad? I… I don’t know, this anime has very obvious flaws yet somehow it has kept me interested so far. Why? Well, that is what I will try to answer in this article.

So welcome back to… I don’t even know what to call this article. Technically it should be “First Impressions” cause we are not far enough into the season for a mid-season review. Regardless, today we are talking about Spy Kyoushitsu. It is one of those rare animes that I can’t decide if I like or not… Well, here’s what I think about it.

What do I think of Spy Kyoushitsu so far?

Well, the anime starts off interesting. Wars have gotten too bloody so they’re played out behind the scenes by spies now. The anime sometimes mixes assassins with spies but, fine I can ignore that little mistake. “The Greatest Spy in the World” is tasked with an “Impossible Mission”. Well, impossible only in name. Impossible missions are missions with a failure chance greater than 90%. So he assembles a team of seven girls from toss-away schools to work with him.

It seems like the anime will develop a whole plot around preparing for this impossible mission and then show us the mission at the end but, that does not happen. The impossible mission is done in the third episode itself. Yes, the seemingly impossible mission is overΒ that quickly. Where will the plot go from here? I have absolutely no idea. I am guessing they will keep getting crazier and crazier missions after this in an “arc” fashion. But for all the buildup, this mission was swept under the rug way too quickly. I wish it went on for a little longer.

This anime also has a weird habit of revealing secretsΒ beforeΒ the enemy is defeated. That is genuinely dumb. All seven girls seemingly have unique abilities but, only 2 of them have been revealed so far. Also, all other characters except Lily and Klaus are just cardboard cutouts who have different dressing styles. I do think this anime has potential though, if it can make the mission loop more interesting, and explore the personality of each character more it canΒ be pretty good.

Conclusion

This is based on just the first three episodes of course. I think this anime has a shot at improving so I will watch it to the end. Of course, I did find it somewhat entertaining despite all of its flaws. As of right now though, Spy Kyoushitsu gets a 5/10… it can easily climb up to a 7 or even an 8 depending on how the remaining episodes go.

With that said, I will take my leave here. I do advise that you at least give Spy Kyoushitsu a chance though. You may find it surprisingly good even though it has all these flaws. Let me know what you think in the comments and I’ll see ya in another one!
