TenSura Season 4 Review: Is It Worth Watching?

TenSura Season 4 Review

I have to say, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 4 was a huge improvement over Season 3 in pretty much every regard. Yeah, I have my issues with the writing, but Season 4 overall was a pretty nice treat. All of the arcs covered in Season 4 had a pretty consistent narrative throughline, were entertaining to watch, and did a good job of expanding the world. So yeah, welcome to my review for TenSura Season 4, and this is bound to be a pretty long one.

At a glance:

  • A real step up from Season 3. The arcs this time actually connect to each other instead of wandering off. If Season 3 was where you started checking out, this is the one that pulls you back in.
  • Granbell carries the whole thing. The season takes its time building him up, and it pays off. Easily one of the better villains TenSura has had, and you end up understanding him more than you expect to.
  • 8Bit showed up this time. The second half looks great, and the 2nd OP might be my favorite in the series. My one real gripe is how fast the ending ties everything back up.

Of course, massive spoiler warning before we continue. I will be discussing major plot events in detail. Either way, let’s get started.

Plot

What TenSura Season 4 Gets Right

Let’s start with the positives first. Granbell was an amazing villain. I love how the entire season builds up to him. His backstory was interesting; in fact, I did a whole article on why I liked his backstory. It made sense; the death of a loved one is never easy. And I really like how the arc is very consistent, slowly taking away the people he cared for one by one. Despite his crash-out, you can’t help but feel for him. I am assuming Yuuki will be the next major villain for the foreseeable future.

I really liked how this season characterized Yuuki. He is not all-knowing by any means. He is just someone who knows how to manipulate current events to suit his own goals. More on him in the character section. But this whole arc did a pretty good job of setting him up as the future big bad as well. The overall world-building for the season was also pretty good. Tempest takes another step in joining the humans as an equal partner; Lubelious is fundamentally changed, and we finally know all about Chloe, Luminous, and Hinata. The whole Chronoa sub-arc was really good, and it was something I did not see coming at all.

Where TenSura Season 4 Falls Short

Now for the negatives. I really don’t like Yuuki’s motivation being just to rule over the world. Granbell had such a good motivation. Going from him to Yuuki, who’s just evil, is a little jarring. And even putting that aside, the biggest issue I have with this season is how quickly everything is wrapped up. Episode 22, you’re like, “oh shit, how are they gonna fix this?” and then just everything is back to normal at the end of Episode 24. Hinata is still alive, and Chloe is back to her usual form.

I would’ve liked it if they at least kept Chloe’s adult form. Doesn’t make sense to just let her be with the other kids after learning about her past, in my opinion. And her still being a child also makes Rimuru and Leon look a bit creepy. Because they build her love for Rimuru when she’s an adult but then reset her back to child form, I really dislike that.

Also yeah, the first few episodes, while important, feel a little too “filler-y,” though that’s a minor issue when the season is 24 episodes long.

Characters

I think I’ve already given an overview of what I think about the characters this season. It is hard to do character sections for a review of shows like TenSura Season 4 because of just how huge the cast is. Though I must say that the new additions- the Primordial Demons, the Rozzo family, and Guy have been pretty good. Really hope we get to see more of the Primordial Demons. Because only Testarossa got a good character moment this season. Though I suppose they’ll all eventually come into play when we get around to Guy Crimson’s arc.

I love how Yuuki has been characterized throughout this season. He is not all-knowing by any means. But the thing is, he is so good at turning every situation in his favor. He can only control the present, and he does that to the best of his ability. I don’t like his motivation just being world domination, but he’s still a damn good and entertaining villain. I’ve already spoken at length about the Rozzo family, so I won’t reiterate that here again.

The whole Chloe, Luminous, and Hinata dynamic is very interesting, but once again, it was concluded a little too soon. And again, I really wish Chloe kept her adult form rather than returning to the kids.

TenSura Season 4 Review

Animation and Production by 8Bit

Absolutely zero complaints here. The production throughout the season, especially in the 2nd half, was amazing. Like, yeah, I wish some of the fights were longer, but this Season easily has some of the best-looking fights in TenSura. You can’t tell me Shion using Ranga’s lightning didn’t go hard as hell in Episode 23. Yuuki killing Mariabell was also quite brutal, to be honest. So definitely good points for overall presentation.

Also, I have to mention the 2nd opening theme. Man, the visuals, the song, the vibe- such an insane opening. Definitely my new favorite TenSura opening at this point. Either way, even if the animations weren’t utterly insane, like Mappa-level insane, 8Bit still did great here. Good to see after they fumbled TWO good shows with awful seasons back-to-back.

TenSura Season 4 Review Score

Here are my final review scores for TenSura Season 4

  • Plot – 7/10
  • Characters – 8/10
  • Production – 8/10
  • Enjoyment – 8/10
  • Overall – 7.75/10

I don’t like giving out scores like “7.75,” but my overall score is always the average of the rest of the 4 scores. So sometimes we end up with numbers like this. Regardless, that concludes my review for TenSura Season 4. This season was pretty good. The best thing this season did was get me interested in TenSura again. I was starting to lose interest in the anime around Season 3, and Season 4 brought me back. And that’s a very important thing. Either way, let me know what you guys think in the comments. I will take my leave here. See ya!
