The Angel Next Door, LN Recommendation of the Week!

I was introduced to the series through the anime adaptation like most people. And while the anime adaptation is mostly fine, it is very rushed in the second half. And that takes away from this series’s slow and methodical nature of character development. On the other hand, the Angel Next Door LN is one of my favorite romance LNs of all time. Yes, it is a slow burn but you can still feel the progress and because of the more methodical progress, the big character events truly feel earned.

This LN is one of the best examples of slow pacing done right without boring the reader. And I needed something more light-hearted to balance out this week’s anime recommendation. So welcome back to another LN recommendation article and today we are talking about The Angel Next Door.

Introduction

The Angel Next Door LN is written by Saeki-san and illustrated by Kazutake Hazano or Hanekoto (depending on the volume). The series originally started as a web novel in 2018 but then the revised LN version started serialization in June 2019 and is still ongoing. As for the anime, it aired in the Winter 2023 season and a second season has been confirmed. But again, I don’t recommend the anime because of the rushed pacing and how much content it skipped over.

Plot

The plot follows Amane and Mahiru. Mahiru is famous at their school being nicknamed the “Angel” for her sweet personality and cute looks. Amane is her neighbor and one day finds her sitting alone in the rain. He just gives her his umbrella out of kindness and only expects her to return it. But because of that little gesture, Mahiru becomes aware of Amane’s living conditions and just can’t leave him alone. The two soon become good friends with Mahiru often coming over to Amane’s home to cook.

Of course, things don’t stop there and they slowly start to develop feelings for one another. As I said, the pacing is deliberately slow but somehow it never feels boring. The slower pacing also makes the character development and Amane/Mahiru’s relationship feel more genuine because it took a lot of time for them to come to terms with each other’s feelings. And then it takes them some more time to learn what it means to be a couple.

Characters

I already commented a bit on how the character development feels more natural because of the slower pacing. Mahiru and Amane are both excellently written characters. There is a lot more to them than just meets the eye. I also love Amane’s friend group consisting of Chitose and Itsuki. Their interactions are always a lot of fun. And it gets better when eventually Mahiru becomes a part of it too. Both Mahiru and Amane get significant character development over time and their relationship feels very natural because well it is paced.

Mahiru doesn’t like being put on a pedestal but almost all of her classmates do that and she can’t really do anything about it. She opens up to Amane because he gives her the space she wants while treating her as a normal person. Amane appreciates Mahiru’s kindness and he accepts her for who she is. He also starts working to improve himself as soon as their relationship becomes official to be the best version of himself for Mahiru and I respect that.
