The Apothecary Diaries Anime is Brilliant

Key points for The Apothercary Diaries Anime Mid-Season Review:

  • The Apothecary Diaries emerged unexpectedly, taking the anime community by storm, similar to the buzz around Frieren. Its sudden popularity has contributed to its ongoing success.
  • The anime’s unique setting in old China, focusing on the intricacies of the Royal Palace rather than conventional war themes, is commendable. The well-distinguished hierarchy and palace dynamics provide a rich backdrop to the narrative.
  • The characters, despite the challenge of Chinese names, are portrayed as quirky and entertaining. The dynamic between Jinshi and Maomao stands out, with Jinshi’s character evolving beyond initial perfection, adding depth. The recent episodes hint at significant developments, potentially revealing more about Maomao’s past.

I am pretty sure that this anime went under most people’s noses till it aired. And when it aired, it pretty much took the whole community by storm. Much like Frieren, The Apothecary Diaries is also so different from the anime we are used to seeing. Frierent still had a bit of buzz and excitement around it, while this anime literally came out of nowhere and surprised us all.

And I am more than happy to say that The Apothecary Diaries has not fallen off. This anime continues to get better. So welcome back to another mid-season review. And we are talking about The Apothecary Diaries today. I am very excited to talk about this anime so let’s just get started.

What do I think of The Apothecary Diaries anime so far?

I think I have praised the setting of this anime enough already. It is set in old China but instead of being about wars and things like that, it is about how the things in the Royal Palace work. And I have to say, the hierarchy, different sections of the palace, and who works where is very well distinguished and explained. The anime does a great job in general of giving us a feel of how life was back then.

The setting alone isn’t the only good things about this anime. At first, I didn’t dig the episodic structure that much but now, the anime has won me over on that front too. Yes, the anime is still kind of episodic but the episodes do build off of one another. On top of that, the plot for the past few episodes has been building up really well. I do feel like something big is coming in future episodes given how the recent episode 15 ended, We may finally get to learn more about Maomao’s past.

Speaking of which, the characters in this anime are awesome as well. Now, I don’t remember a lot of the names. But that is because Chinese names are hard and then their pronunciation in Japanese is different as well. That’s on me. But the characters in this anime are quirky and entertaining. Jinshi and Maomao’s dynamic is simply fantastic. Jinshi has also been getting a lot of character development these past few episodes. And I appreciate that. Earlier he came off as “perfect” but over time, we’ve gotten to see different layers to his character. On top of that the side characters are great as well.

That is all for now!

All in all, the anime has really picked up in these past few episodes. I look forward to seeing more of it. If you haven’t started The Apothecary Diaries yet, you are missing out. With that said, I will take my leave here. See ya!
